Autism at Magill School

Special Events and Students with Autism
While events such as excursions, incursions, swimming, and Mega Mix Fun Day cause great excitement, it is important to acknowledge how changes in routine, even welcome ones, can impact our students, particularly those with autism. While these activities can be joyful and enriching, they may also bring feelings of anxiety, confusion, or overstimulation for some children.
Children with autism often rely on routine and predictability to feel safe and successful. Sudden changes or unfamiliar experiences can be overwhelming and lead to distress or behavioural challenges. However, with thoughtful support and preparation, these transitions can become opportunities for growth and positive experiences.
At school, we strive to support students in transitioning positively to these events by using social stories, providing information about what to expect, and discussing any concerns or worries they may have. Your support from home will help them build confidence to join in these events with less anxiety.
How You Can Help at Home:
Preview Changes Together
Talk to your child about upcoming events in advance. Use calendars, countdowns, or social stories to help them understand what to expect. Visual schedules can also be a helpful way to reinforce changes.
Practice and Role Play
If your child is attending a special event or a new location, practising scenarios at home can ease anxiety. Role-playing what might happen can make new situations feel more familiar.
Maintain Some Consistency
While the schedule may be different at school, try to keep things as consistent as possible at home. Regular routines before and after school can provide grounding and predictability.
Use Positive Reinforcement
Celebrate your child’s flexibility and bravery. Even small successes during changes should be acknowledged and praised.
Communicate with School Staff
Let your child’s teacher or support staff know what strategies work well for your child. If needed, ask for accommodations like quiet breaks, preview materials, or visual aids.
Remember, your support makes a big difference. With preparation and understanding, all students can not only manage, but truly enjoy the excitement that comes with special school events and transitions.
