3/4 Learning News

What's happening in Year 3/4 space?

Dear Families,

Welcome back to Term 2! We’ve had a fantastic start to the term in the Grade 3/4 classroom, full of exciting learning and fun events.

In Literacy, we’ve begun reading our new class novel, Yirra and Her Deadly Dog, Demon. The students are already engaged with Yirra’s adventures and are enjoying exploring the characters and story themes. As part of our reading, we’ve also been learning about Indigenous culture, including exploring the history and meaning of the Aboriginal flag. These discussions have helped us better understand the cultural context of the story and sparked thoughtful conversations in class.

In Numeracy, our focus has shifted to fractions. The students have been learning to identify and represent fractions, count by fractions, and convert between improper fractions and mixed numbers. It’s been wonderful to see everyone developing confidence with these new concepts through hands-on activities and group work.

Last Friday, we had our School Cross Country, and it was fantastic to see so many students giving it their best effort and cheering each other on. A big congratulations to those who qualified and competed in the Division Cross Country this Friday – we are all proud of you!

Mitchelton Excursion

On Monday this week, as part of our “Telling Stories through Art” community project this term, our students had the opportunity of visiting one of the largest collections of First Nations artwork stored at our very own Mitchelton. The children explored the gallery, lead by two art educators who discussed the deep cultural meanings behind each piece. It was so interesting! We learnt about the symbols, colours, and patterns used by First Nations artists to tell stories about land, family, and heritage. We were also able to explore the grounds of Mitchelton, spending some time in nature next to the river at Mitchelton. We took some time to take in the landscapes and created our own sketches, taking from the scenery around us. We were brave and also ventured up the tower to take in the views of the winery and landscapes surrounding the area. Breathtaking views!

This excursion was curated to tie into our classroom learning, where we’ve been exploring the visual arts and how stories can be told through visual expression.

This term Jacqui and Ebony will be job sharing the Grade 3/4 space. Our days are as follows.
