1/2 Learning News

Hello Families,
Welcome back to term 2!
We hope you had a wonderful Easter break with your children. This term we are so excited to welcome Miss Maddy back to our class 2 days per week. The break down each week will be as follows:
Monday - Maddy
Tuesday - Gen
Wednesday - Gen & Maddy
Thursday - Gen
Friday - Gen
We also have our beautiful library set up in the MacKillop Hall, which the children have been able to utilise in class time and at lunch times if they want to be involved in quieter activities.
Literacy
This week in Literacy we have been looking at verbs. The children enjoyed identifying verbs within a sentence and writing their own texts with rich, interesting verbs. We also looked at the ‘ee’ and ‘ea’ sounds in words, practicing writing and reading words with the sound as well as finding them in texts and building simple words with sound tiles.
Maths
We have been looking at measurement this fortnight, focussing on length. We began our unit by measuring the Cross Country course through MacKillop Walk using a metre wheel and counting in 5 metre increments, with Finley, Huda, Adam, Grace and Aahn tallying as we went. We are now looking at comparing lengths using informal measurements such s string, and using terms such as shorter and longer.
Mitchelton Excursion
As part of our “Telling Stories through Art” community project this term, our students had the privilege of visiting one of the largest collections of First Nations artwork at Mitchelton. Guided by curator Sam, the children explored the gallery, learning about the deep cultural meanings behind each piece.
Sam explained the symbols, colours, and patterns used by First Nations artists to tell stories about land, family, and heritage. The students were captivated by how art can preserve culture and pass down important messages through generations.
After the gallery visit, the children spent some time in nature next to the river at Mitchelton. Surrounded by the beauty of the landscape, they were inspired to create their own artworks, reflecting their personal stories and connection to the natural world.
This excursion beautifully tied into our classroom learning, where we’ve been exploring how stories can be told through visual expression. The gallery visit and time spent in nature sparked creativity and reflection, giving students a deeper understanding of how art can be a powerful form of storytelling.
Cross Country
We held our school Cross Country last Friday and it was amazing to see everyone trying their best and encouraging each other.
