Principal's Message

By Jenny Hassett

Welcome Back Term 2

We hope everyone had a safe and enjoyable term break and are all feeling refreshed and ready for what is shaping up to be an exciting term.

We have a number of special events being held during this term so please keep a constant check on COMPASS for all details. Please remember that we are unable to accept late permissions for any excursion. Organising these events is rather involved in terms of paperwork to the region, booking fees, staffing arrangements etc.

If you are planning for a holiday midyear the Term 2 holiday break is as follows:

Term 2 concludes on Friday 4th July @ 2.30pm. Students return on Monday 21st July @ 9am.

Groundforce May 17th

Over the years we have had a strong association with Kardinia Church. They have supported our school in so many ways. They have now kindly offered to assist us with their Groundforce Project. This event will take place on Saturday 17th May 2025.

We would welcome any assistance from our parent community on this day. There is a variety of jobs including mulching, painting, planting trees, carpentry etc. If you could spare a few hours on this Saturday morning we would be most grateful. Please let the school office know if you are available to assist. There will be a community barbeque at 1pm for the workers on that day.

What is Groundforce?

Groundforce is a project of Kardinia Community Services and Kardinia Church. It is a large scale, one day, landscaping makeover of the outdoor space of a local school, kindergarten or community organisation. This annual event enlists more than 150 volunteers from Kardinia Church who come together with participants from your organisation to complete the various projects we have agreed upon, making a significant contribution to the community in a practical, hands-on way of service.

Schools and Community organisations are often faced with tight budgets and changing priorities which means they don’t always have the resources to keep up with outdoor maintenance or revitalisation of playgrounds and landscaping.

Groundforce becomes a vital connection between church and community, using the people power of the local church, along with generous donations of materials, equipment and services from local businesses who sponsor this event.

The team can complete projects in the following areas: Gardening and mulching, Painting, small scale construction/building projects and updating playground areas.

Groundforce is provided free of charge to recipient organisations.

Hats/ Beannies

Hats

During Terms 2 and 3 Students can wear navy beanies to keep their heads warm. Beanies with the school logo are available online or from the school office. Coloured and football beanies are for wearing over the weekends.

This is Your Body

Children in today’s world face constant exposure to media and can begin to develop a negative body image. It is important that we as adults constantly encourage each child from an early age that they are incredible and always use positivity when referring to their efforts and body image.

We have contracted an outside professional to present sessions to our Grade 5 and 6 students. There was a small cost to parents, but the majority of the cost was subsidized by the school  as we believe this is a very important issue.

Session 1 - Body image with the year 5's

- Why do we feel the way we do about our bodies?

- Why do all of our bodies look different?

- What do I do if someone makes a comment about my body?

- How do I stand up for my friend if they are teased about their body?

- Why is focussing on what my body can do more important than the way I look?

- Lots of activities to practice focusing on function

- Learning practical strategies they can use if they are struggling with their body image

Session 2 - Body image with the year 6's

- Why do we feel the way we do about our bodies?

- Why do all of our bodies look different?

- What do I do if someone makes a comment about my body?

- How do I stand up for my friend if they are teased about their body?

- Why is focussing on what my body can do more important than the way I look?

- Lots of activities to practice focusing on function

- Learning practical strategies they can use if they are struggling with their body image

Session 3 - Nutrition with both the years 5's and 6's
