What a big return to school we have had for Term 2! We have hit the ground running with the first 2 rounds of Winter Interschool Sport, our amazing excursion to Sovereign Hill and the House Athletics Carnival!
We look forward to sharing some student recounts in our next newsletters!
What's Coming up in the Classroom in the Next Fortnight:
Maths: Our focus will be on measurement: using materials to measure in cm and m, calculating perimeter and area of given spaces and shapes. This will also invilve problem solving to create spaces with given areas and perimeters.
Reading: We have all begun our new class novel, We Are Wolves by Katrina Nannestaad, a historical fiction based in Germany in 1944. This text links well to our historical inquiry, particularly as we start to look at immigration in Australian history. We have a strong focus this fortnight on making connections with the text and it's characters and understanding and anaylsing the setting and place within the text. Within independent reading, we will continnue to work on reciprocl reading goals to boost comprehension.
Writing: Students will be working on the genre of Narrative over the next fortnighht. This will include using the Willy Writing Cycle alongside the 6+1 traits of writing. We will look how to develop vivid chracters, describe setting and also review clauses and sentence fluency.
Inquiry: Students will continue to undertake lessons and investigations into different aspects of Australian history, embedded throughout our reading lessons. During Week 3 and 4, this will include what life was like on the Goldfields and the impact on Indigenous Australians.
Willy Kids & Respectful Realtionships: Students will be looking at solving personal problems using their work on positive self-talk. There is lots of conversations and brainstorming on how to best tackle various scenarios. We will also be exploring what it means to wonder as a Willy Kid and how this is an important life skill as we embrace the world around us.
Interschool Sports:
Round 2- Away v St Mary's
Round 3- Away v Sacred Heart
Round 4- Home v Newport Gardens
District Cross Country- If your child has qualified for this event, it will take place during Week 3, Wednesday 7th May at McIvor Reserve, Yarraville. There will be a bus travelling from school for the event. Please keep an eye out on Compass for all details.
