From the Principal

"The beginning of wisdom is this: Get wisdom. Though it cost all you have, get understanding." Proverbs 4:7 (NIV)

Welcome back to what promises to be an event-filled Term 2.

Thank you to all the parents who attended our recent Parent and Teacher nights. If you would like any further information or follow-up, please reach out to your child's Mentor who can steer you in the right direction.

At this week's Principal’s Assembly, we welcomed back the many students who took part in trips over the term break. As they presented their experiences, I challenged them not simply to recount where they went or what they did, but to share something they had learned. What had piqued their curiosity? What had moved them? As Marcel Proust reminds us, "The real voyage of discovery consists not in seeking new landscapes, but in having new eyes."

We were treated to a range of thoughtful insights. Students spoke about the traditional Māori practice of singing to Kauri trees, expressing reverence and a deep connection to the land. Our musicians shared lessons in adaptability, recounting moments when the choirmaster had to improvise without a music stand and the logistics involved in managing an array of luggage and equipment. Those representing Australia at the World Debating and Public Speaking Championships in Kuala Lumpur reflected on the differences in phrasing and language used to present similar ideas. Students returning from Yogyakarta were moved by the strong sense of community they observed and amazed by the different forms daily life takes. Finally, those who ventured into the wilderness on the Duke of Edinburgh challenge reflected on the importance of overcoming individual challenges as a team.

The purpose of the Assembly was not just to celebrate the incredible experiences of these trips, but to highlight that learning and insight are possible at every turn. With interest, curiosity and humility, we can continually broaden our horizons.

As we move into Term 2, students will be busy with EISM Athletics, Debating, Chess, Mock Trials and our full suite of co-curricular activities. In particular, the entire Senior School will be immersed over the next few weeks in preparing for House Performing Arts, developing their skills in dance, singing and acting.

It is not the events themselves that matter most, but the learnings and connections, that come from engaging wholeheartedly. I am grateful to be part of a community where students are so willing to embrace new challenges.
