Junior Visual Art

Colour has been a big focus in the art room so far this term. The Year Twos have mixed primary colours to form new exciting colours to create fabulous backgrounds for their rainbow serpent. They have also made wonderful rainbow trees.

The Year Ones have really thought about colour and created cool colour moons and warm coloured suns. These students are now working on handprinted birds.

The Foundation students have been using the warm colours to hand print butterfly wings. They are now using loads of colour and printing techniques for the body of their butterfly. These will flutter home soon 😊

Here are some more happy snaps from the art room for you to enjoy!

Junior Performing Arts

In Jnr Performing Arts, our youngest learners (Prep to Level 2) have been developing their understanding of musical elements.

Prep students used actions, played music games, sung, played drums and danced to show the difference between loud (forte) and quiet (piano) sounds, as well as slow (largo) and fast (presto).

While Levels 1 and 2 explored these concepts in more detail, learning the musical terms.  All students then had the opportunity to express different tempos (the speed of the music), such as slow (largo) and fast (presto), through creative movement. This helped them connect the musical concepts to physical expression, enhancing their understanding and appreciation of music. Through engaging movement activities, they demonstrated their understanding of how changes in tempo affect the feeling of the music.  This hands-on approach has helped them build a strong foundation in musical understanding and expression.

Grades 3 & 4

We have started Term 2 with a bang, commencing our topic of Dance. The students spent the first 3 weeks learning about dance elements and choreographic devices, such as canons. They have showcased some fantastic dance moves during whole class dance canons and even started small group choreography, presenting to the grade.

Week 4 has us commencing our big term dance routine. In the past, there has been one Grade 3 cohort dance and one Grade 4 cohort dance. Due to composites this year, that will not be the case and the six grades will be split into two groups, learning two different dances.

Grades 3 / 4 B, D and F will be learning one dance, while Grades 3 / 4 C, E and A, a different dance. While Ms Jedrys loves some country music and boot scootin’, this year’s dance theme is ‘pop’ and both dances will reflect some high energy and fun moves!

Grades 5 & 6

The senior classes have also commenced their topic of Dance. Their focus has also been dance elements and choreographic devices, learning a variation of five different canons and completing self-choreographed group performances.

Week 4 also has us commencing our big term dance routines. Just like the middle school, the composite grades means there will be two different dances with Grades 5 / 6 A, B and C doing one, and 5 / 6 C, E and F another dance routine. The senior grades will also be learning their choreographed dances to pop songs, with one being a well-known song from the King of Pop himself (Michael Jackson!) and the other a current favourite female artist.

All these dances across middle and senior school will take most of this term to learn and once they’re performance ready, dates will be chosen in which all four of my dance groups will showcase these awesome dance routines!

Dance Club

The four Performing Arts Captains ran their first Dance Club session last week with great success. Captains Esther and Hannie ran the Grade 3 dance, while captains Tiana and Carina ran the Grade 4 dance. The four captains have worked tirelessly outside of school hours to create their choreography and are giving up their lunchtime to teach these dances. Looking forward to seeing the progress each week and thank you to those Grade 3 & 4 students who have joined. It’s not too late to come along if there are students who wish to join! Below are some photos of Dance Club in action.

Dance Club is held Thursday lunchtimes, first half, in the Performing Arts room and in the hall.

Dancer of the Week

This term, one student from each of my Performing Arts classes will have an opportunity to receive a ‘Dancer of the Week’ award. This will go to a student who consistently demonstrates the school values in the lesson, but who is always trying their best with their dancing, following teacher instruction and showing leadership & kindness towards their peers.

Hope everyone has a wonderful week,

Chrissy Jedrys - Senior Performing Arts Teacher
