Visual Arts

This term in Visual Arts, students have been exploring the world of paint, beginning with a focus on watercolour. Across all year levels, students experimented with a variety of techniques to create vibrant and expressive artworks.

Foundation/Grade 1

Inspired by the work of Eric Carle, our youngest artists created colourful caterpillars on leaves. Using watercolour paints, watercolour pencils, and collage techniques, students produced beautiful, layered artworks full of texture and charm.

Grades 2/3

Students experimented with raised salt watercolour painting, using PVA glue and salt to achieve stunning crystal-like effects. They also studied Eric Carle’s collage techniques, cutting and assembling painted butterflies and other creations of their own unique designs.

Grades 3/4

Students expanded their watercolour skills by learning nine different techniques, including ‘wet-on-wet’ and ‘resist’ (using crayon or pastel under the paint). They created geode-inspired artworks using salt and watercolours to mimic the natural, organic forms of crystal geodes.

Grades 5/6

The artist Pete Cromer was our inspiration. Students created striking animal collages using watercolour paints and pencils, applying a range of techniques to layer and combine colours and textures. The results were bold, expressive, and truly eye-catching!

Looking Ahead

Over the next few weeks, students will begin working with acrylic paints, learning how to mix primary colours to create new shades. They’ll explore the work of renowned historic and current artists such as Carolyn GavinHenri Matisse, and Henri Rousseau.

After that, we’ll dive into exciting Winter Solstice-themed projects—stay tuned!
