Fremantle Traffic Bridge closure:

Keeping our community moving

Parents and carers are advised that the Fremantle Traffic Bridge will close from 1 February 2026 for up to 12 months to enable completion of a new traffic bridge for Fremantle. This closure is expected to significantly impact traffic flow, especially along Stirling Highway, which is a key route for many in our College community.

To help manage congestion and keep traffic moving during this time, the Western Australian Government is implementing a range of initiatives from the start of the 2026 school year, including additional train and bus services, a free‑travel zone along South Terrace between Douro Road and Fremantle Station for SmartRider users, expanded free parking at Fremantle Station for public transport passengers, and real‑time traffic monitoring along Stirling Highway. Road users can also access up‑to‑date traffic information through the new Live Traffic WA mobile app.

Families are encouraged to plan ahead and consider alternative travel options, such as using public transport, carpooling, or active transport, to help reduce the number of vehicles on the road during peak hours. Further information, including fact sheets, an interactive map, and pocket guides, is available via Main Roads WA and the Fremantle Bridges Alliance community information sessions.

Key facts and support measures

  • The Fremantle Traffic Bridge will close from 1 February 2026 for up to 12 months to allow construction of the new bridge.

  • Around 24,000 vehicles that currently use the bridge each day will need to find alternative routes during the closure, which may increase traffic on nearby Stirling Bridge and surrounding roads.

  • From the start of the 2026 school year, initiatives to keep Stirling Highway moving include: additional peak‑time train and bus services, a free‑travel zone along South Terrace between Douro Road and Fremantle Station, and expanded free parking at Fremantle Station for SmartRider users.

  • Main Roads is modifying key intersections and installing new devices to provide enhanced, real‑time monitoring of traffic movements, supported by permanent incident response teams stationed along Stirling Highway.

  • Drivers can access real‑time alerts on traffic conditions and congestion in the Fremantle area via the Live Traffic WA app, with further resources and community pop‑up information sessions available through Main Roads and the Fremantle Bridges Alliance.

Families are encouraged to make use of these enhanced public transport options and planning tools to ease congestion and support safer, more efficient travel during the bridge closure period.
