Week 7: Life Saving Skills Beach Excursion

On Tuesday, 18th November, our Grade 6 students took part in an exciting — and very chilly — Lifesaving Skills excursion at Seaford Beach, supported by expert instructors from Lifesaving Victoria. This hands-on program was a fantastic opportunity for students to learn practical water-safety and rescue skills in a real coastal environment.

Across the program, students explored a range of lifesaving techniques designed to help keep themselves and others safe around water. They bravely entered the very cold surf to practise reading beach conditions, recognising hazards, and signalling for help if they or someone nearby were ever in trouble. Their resilience and positive attitude were truly impressive!

Students also had the chance to practise:

  • CPR skills, including the correct steps to take in an emergency situation
  • Body-board rescue techniques, confidently pulling someone to safety
  • Using everyday items as improvised flotation devices
  • Assessing risk and choosing safe entry and exit points at the beach

A definite highlight was working as a team to complete rescue simulations — using body boards, throw-rescue equipment, and quick decision-making to support someone in need. Instructors praised the students for their enthusiasm, teamwork, and maturity throughout the session.

This excursion not only aligns with the Victorian Health & PE curriculum but also equips students with lifelong knowledge to help them enjoy Victoria’s beaches safely and responsibly. With summer on the way, these skills could make a real difference.

We are incredibly proud of our Grade 6 students for their effort, bravery and excellent behaviour.

Week 9: Grade 6 Camp: Forest Edge (Neerim South)

What an unforgettable week our Grade 6 students had at Forest Edge Camp in Neerim South!

Excitement was sky-high from the moment the buses left school, with teachers treated to a soundtrack of “Are we there yet?”“How much longer?” and of course the all-important question, “Who am I in a cabin with?”

The anticipation set the tone for a week filled with adventure, teamwork and plenty of laughs.

Despite some very wet weather causing a few delays, our students showed incredible positivity, flexibility and resilience. Rain or shine, they embraced every challenge with enthusiasm and big smiles.

Across the camp, students took part in an amazing range of activities, including:

  • Low ropes course – building teamwork, balance and problem-solving
  • Zip line – an exhilarating ride through the bush canopy
  • Crate building – stacking, climbing and holding their nerve
  • Riddle Rogaine – thinking on their feet while navigating the grounds
  • Bushwalks – exploring the lush Forest Edge environment
  • Oval games & team challenges – lots of energy, laughter and friendly competition
  • Movie night & trivia night – cosy evenings to unwind together

To top it all off, students enjoyed hearty camp meals and happily gobbled up every bite — keeping energy levels high for the next adventure!

Throughout the week, our Grade 6s demonstrated maturity, kindness and a genuine willingness to step out of their comfort zones. They encouraged one another, celebrated each other’s achievements, and made memories that will stay with them long after primary school.

A huge thank you to our dedicated staff for supporting the campers, and to our families for your trust and preparation. It was a fantastic week of bonding and bravery, and we are incredibly proud of every student.
