Grade 2

Reading

In reading, we have been exploring the book ‘George’s Marvellous Medicine’ by Roald Dahl. Students have enjoyed diving into this narrative, unpacking descriptive vocabulary and language, learning how the author is able to gain the readers attention. As we read through, we continuously practise our prediction skills, fluency in reading as well as retelling the events happening from the beginning, middle to end of each chapter.

Writing

In writing, students have begun exploring persuasive writing, with a focus on understanding why people write to persuade and how writers use words to share their opinions to convince others.  We have been learning to understand who we are writing to when we write to persuade, identifying who our audience can be as well as why it is important. Students have also been learning about reasoning and how they support opinions. Accompanying this, students’ next task is adding supporting examples to make their writing more convincing of their own opinions.

Mathematics

Following on and using prior knowledge of previous maths lessons, students are now learning new topics. Students began learning how to give directions when moving on different parts of a map, further unpacking key words used when giving directional instruction such as ‘forward’, ‘backward’, ‘clockwise’ and ‘anti-clockwise’. They have had the opportunity to further solve grid problems using the directional instructions learned.  Moving onto a new topic the following week, students have been learning about solving addition, subtraction and multiplication using the bar model as well as prior knowledge of partitioning double digit numbers. This was consolidated through worded problems.

Integrated Studies

In Integrated Studies, we have been continuing our learning about First Nations Australians, specifically the differences between ‘Acknowledgement of Country’ vs ‘Welcome to Country’. Students explored this through unpacking related questions using our 5 W’s - Who, What, When, Where and Why. Following this we investigated our local country, specifically what it’s called and the use of Indigenous Symbolism.
