YEAR THREE
Grade Bulletin - Term Four, 2024
Our Lady of Fatima Catholic Primary School provides a range of holistic learning experiences to enable students to:
E3 Morality and Justice - Called to Holiness
This unit explores the Christian call to holiness – which all of us receive at Baptism. Students will identify, in their experience, people who demonstrate holiness and use their gifts in love and service. They will also learn about the canonised Saints – those whom the Church has declared Saints and set before us as models of holiness. The process of canonisation will be explored. Students will be encouraged to identify ways that they can live out their own baptismal call by living lives of love and service.
DLY3 Prayer, Liturgy and Sacraments - Advent and Christmas
The Liturgical Year units enable students to explore the traditions, beliefs, Scripture and events celebrated by the Catholic community throughout the Liturgical Year and especially during the time of Advent to Christmas, Lent to Holy Week and Easter to Pentecost.
During this unit, through shared reading, creating texts, oral language and communication students learn research skills and use these to explore and create multimedia informative texts about the living world, habitats and creatures. This unit will cover contextual concepts focusing on genre, perspective, imagery, symbol and connotation. Students work towards creating their own Information Reports that include headings, paragraphs beginning with topic sentences and descriptive language. The Literature this term is based on the following texts; ‘Searching for Cicadas’ (hybrid text) and ‘Animals of the World’. In Reading, students will continue to focus on fluency and comprehension strategies. In spelling, students will follow the Year 3 Soundwaves spelling program.
Students are explicitly taught concepts from the NSW Mathematics K-10 Syllabus. Each lesson consists of a daily review where the children will revise past concepts covered regularly. The main concepts taught in Term 4 are: Representing Number, Three-Dimensional Space (Volume), Partitioned Fractions, Non-Spatial Measure (Time), Multiplicative Relations (Multiplication) and Additive Relations (Addition).
This term we will continue our unit on ‘Community and Remembrance.’ This topic provides a study of identity and diversity in both a local and broader context. Moving from the heritage of their local area, students explore the historical features and diversity of their community. They examine local, state and national symbols and emblems of significance, and celebrations and commemorations, both locally and in other places around the world.
In Science and Technology, Year 3 will continue to explore the Material World. This strand focuses on how solids and liquids change state and the properties of natural and processed materials. Students investigate how different properties of materials affect their suitability for products. They have the opportunity to develop a design solution to an identified need or opportunity, using a variety of materials. Stage 2 of this strand develops students’ knowledge and understanding of the properties and performance of materials and the material sciences.
In sports lessons, Year 3 students will enhance their movement skills through engaging activities that promote coordination, balance, and teamwork. The program will include a focus on dance, allowing students to compose their own routines and express creativity through movement. Additionally, they will learn various modified sports, fostering a deeper understanding of teamwork and sportsmanship. Through drills, games, and friendly competitions, students will develop their skills while emphasising the values of respect and fair play.
Our Swimming program is run by Neilson’s Swim School at Caringbah Leisure Centre. They provide qualified, experienced instructors who teach water safety and race readiness. The swimming program is part of the school curriculum and is compulsory for all children. The intensive swimming program will run for 5 days. Each lesson is 40 minutes.

The module aims to enhance student safety and wellbeing by promoting positive relationships, positive behaviours and expectations. It leverages peer-led leadership, encouraging older students to guide their younger peers with engaging activities. The approach emphasises strengths-based strategies and calls for a whole-school commitment to ensure sustained effectiveness in creating a safe and supportive school environment that aligns beautifully with our SPBL and Mercy Values.

All students and teachers will participate in the digital learning platform via Zoom weekly sessions with educators in China.
