Safety & First Aid News

It is coming in to asthma season with the constant change in weather, asthma is often triggered.

Asthma first aid in schools involves recognizing symptoms (wheezing, coughing, difficulty breathing) and acting immediately using the 4x4x4 method: sit the student upright, give 4 puffs of a blue/grey reliever via a spacer, wait 4 minutes, and repeat if needed, calling 000 if there is no improvement. Schools should have emergency kits, trained staff, and updated action plans.

Asthma First Aid Steps (4x4x4 Rule)

  1. Sit the student upright: Keep them calm, comfortable, and upright (not lying down).
  2. Administer medication:
    • Shake the blue/grey reliever puffer (e.g., Ventolin, Asmol, Airomir).
    • Use a spacer (preferred).
    • Give 4 separate puffs, one at a time, allowing 4 breaths per puff.
  3. Wait 4 minutes: If no improvement, repeat steps 2 and 3.
  4. Call 000 (Ambulance): If there is still no improvement, call 000 immediately, stating the student is having breathing difficulties.
  5. Continue treatment: Repeat step 2 (4 puffs every 4 minutes) while waiting for the ambulance

If your child's plan is out of date, Joanne Clarke will be in touch so that you can make an appointment with your GP to update this.  If your child's ventolin is running low, we will also be in touch so that you can make sure that your child has all the medication required for their plan.

Thank you for your assistance with this.
