Creating Digitally Responsible Citizens

Demonstrating Academic Integrity

Gallery Image

Students are encouraged to be knowledgeable producers of their work, rather than passive consumers and editors of others' work. Students are encouraged to cite all sources of information used for assessment and school work and ensure that the work they are producing is their own. Sometimes it can be hard for students to “start” homework or a task but learning happens when students persevere and overcome challenges by trying, being inquisitive and asking questions.

Students will undertake a Digital Citizenship workshop during Week 4 which will cover information about academic integrity, plagiarism and malpractice.

Students are always encouraged here at the College to demonstrate academic integrity by:

  • correctly referencing information by citing the sources and providing a reference list

  • sitting their own exams

  • submitting their own work

  • using information appropriately according to the copyright and privacy laws

  • acting responsibly and appropriately in all academic pursuits

  • considering cultural and intellectual property rights of others

  • developing their own ideas

Students must remember that Generative AI output is the product of the work of others. Therefore the same principles of academic integrity, in particular around malpractice, apply. Students can refer to the Stage 4, 5 and 6 Assessment Procedures for further information and guidance.

How can parents/carers help?

Parents are not expected to help students with the content of their homework. However, students may need support with planning their time and focusing their attention when outside the classroom. Parents may:

  • Help students to find a space to complete homework that is free of distraction

  • Help students to plan time when homework will be completed across the week (no homework should be assigned that is due the following day)

  • Ask students what they intend to achieve in the allotted time that evening

  • At the completion of the homework, ask students to show them what they achieved

  • Ask students what they need to do next to follow up their learning (they may need to ask questions, seek help, plan further revision etc)

  • Check students’ diaries and encourage them to use this to plan ahead for revision (students must bring their diary to each class)

  • Liaise with the class teacher, Homegroup teacher, KLA Leader or House Leader if a student is struggling or adjustments may be required

The above excerpt and further information and advice can be found in the Homework Guidelines and Procedures document. This is also available for students in their School Diaries.

Canvas Support

Students are currently undergoing assessment tasks in all of their subjects. Many of these tasks should be available in the Canvas Calendar and students are encouraged to record their tasks, along with their homework, in their Student Diaries.

If you need support with understanding how to navigate Canvas, please contact myself via email: freebodyc@ww.catholic.edu.au or contact the school to arrange a time to meet.

Canvas Access

A Compass notification was sent to Parents/Carers earlier today in regard to Canvas access.

Parents may be aware from the media that Canvas has experienced a global data breach.

At this stage, we do not have any specific information that can be shared.

Canvas has been put into maintenance mode overnight and the College is awaiting an update from Instructure. Therefore, at this time staff, students and parents are unable to access Canvas.

As a precaution, parents should not respond to any requests that may appear to come from Canvas at this time.

Learning will continue in classes and families will be updated as more information comes to hand.
