Foundation

Foundation children have been exploring how forces like pushing and pulling can change the direction of objects and how obstacles influence movement. In small groups students used blocks and a small ball to create a course that made the ball change direction.

Year 1

Using oil, water and detergent students mixed different combinations to identify that not everything can mix together. We made predictions, observed what happened and then recorded our results.

Students investigated how ice can change form, without changing what it is made of. Using salt, sugar, body heat and torches, they explored different ways to melt ice and shared their observations.

Year 3

Grade 3 students have been busy learning about heat transfer and how certain insulating material can slow down the process. To put this new learning into action, this fortnight students have been building Esky prototypes that will be tested. Which homemade Esky will keep the ice the coolest the longest?

Grade 4

Students explored distant forces by investigating how magnets can be used to move toy cars through attracting and repelling forces. They created mazes, tested their ideas and measured the distance their cars travelled during the investigation.

Year 5

Next time you walk past the Science room, be sure to pop your head in to see our beautiful stained-glass windows that the Grade 5’s created. Students had to design a section that needed to include an opaque, transparent and translucent section with the use of primary-coloured cellophanes to create a secondary colour.

Year 6

Students have been learning about insoluble and soluble solutions. In our last experiment we investigated the solubility of solvents and learnt about a fair test, variables and how to keep things as controlled as possible.

We'd love as many of our young scientists to take part in the 2026 National Water Week poster competition. This year’s theme is Water Heroes Make Every Drop Count, and we can’t wait to see your imaginative, colourful and inspiring creations.

You need to design and upload a poster that celebrates this year’s theme. Entries close 5pm, Friday 11 September, so get those pencils, paints and ideas flowing.  You can enter with your parent at home through the website: Coliban Water’s 2026 National Water Week Competition page or drop of your poster with your name, age and class into the Science Room for submission.
