Ongoing Assessments
At the completion of Semester 1, mid year reports will be distributed to all families. Over the next several weeks, teachers will be doing pieces of assessments to monitor and show the growth that the students have achieved in different areas of the curriculum. This week involves the whole school doing a moderated writing task. The piece involved looking at a picture of a child in a mythical type of world. Students from each class received the same picture and from there teachers observe all of the conventions of writing that the students implement when writing independently. The Victorian Curriculum 2.0 gives teachers a guide in relation to the expectations that students at different year levels are expected to be able to achieve. This ranges from their use of punctuation, spelling, grammar, structure, imagination, vocabulary, etc. Teachers conduct Dibels testing which relates to different aspects of reading, as per their year level. These types of testing are conducted three times a year. For Numeracy, the students will complete Number and Algebra tasks through the Essential Assessment program that the school uses. These two topics have assessment pieces allocated three times throughout the year. These are very valuable to monitor the students grow and also to share if there is a particular topic that may need further addressing. It also provides an insight into how many and what concepts the students have managed to maintain in their Long-Term memory. Whilst these are formal types of assessments, the teachers throughout the semester also conduct informal testing and observations to ensure that your child is receiving the best education possible.
