Humanities Showcase

Semester 1 has been a busy period in the Humanities Learning Area. Students and teachers have been involved in a range of engaging learning opportunities and activities. There is a Year 7 fieldwork excursion still to come. Here is a snapshot of what has been happening across the Humanities:
Market Day – Year 11 Business Management
Students developed a full business plan and worked through the key steps involved in establishing a business. On Market Day, that preparation came together as students managed and operated their stalls for Coburg High students as their customers. The experience gave students a practical understanding of business management concepts, complementing the theory covered in Unit 1.
To Parliament – Year 11 Politics
Year 11 Politics students recently visited Parliament House on Spring Street as part of Coburg High School's ongoing trial program. Students had the opportunity to debate a curriculum issue in the parliamentary chambers, getting a firsthand experience of how parliament operates.
Fieldwork – Year 12 Geography
Year 12 Geography students completed their compulsory VCE fieldwork at Montague Precinct. Students investigated a research question related to their Land Use Change topic, gathering primary data through a walking tour, a visit to a development site, and meetings with local planners. Back in the classroom, students analysed and presented their findings in a fieldwork report.
History Teachers Association of Victoria VCE conference
Our VCE History program was recognised beyond the classroom, Amanda and Chloe, presented at the 2026 HTAV VCE History Conference. Their workshop centred on how precise, actionable feedback can empower VCE History students. They spoke about driving real improvement and building student confidence in the study of History
Medieval Day – Year 8 Humanities
Year 8 Humanities students took part in an immersive Medieval incursion as part of their study of Medieval Europe. Students explored aspects of medieval society including fashion, dance, weapons, games, and crime and punishment, with the day's tournament - featuring simulated combat.
Fieldwork – Year 11 Geography
Year 11 Geography students travelled to Kinglake to investigate Bushfire Disaster Risk Reduction. Students met with local environmentalists to examine the impacts of planned burns on the forest, and visited a local CFA brigade to learn how firefighting approaches changed since the 2009 Black Saturday fires. Residents were surveyed about their preparedness for future fires. Back in the classroom, students spent time writing up a fieldwork report analysing their data.
Social Education Victoria Conference
Coburg High School's own Jaan and James presented at the Social Education Victoria VCE Politics Conference online. They shared their approach to inquiry-based learning. They showcased the work being done at Coburg High School in year 10 to support engagement in the subject of Politics
Pentridge Prison - Year 11 Legal Studies
Year 11 Legal Studies students recently visited Pentridge Prison as part of their study of criminal law and the Australian legal system. The tour gave students a concrete reference point for the unit's focus on how laws are made and enforced, the principles of justice, and the criminal justice system in practice.
