Year 6 News

Reading

In Reading, Year 6 students have continued reading the class novel I Am Malala, while focusing on developing thoughtful predictions and identifying main ideas with supporting details. They have been practising how to narrow down key ideas within a text and strengthen their comprehension skills by making a range of connections, including text-to-text, text-to-self, and text-to-world. These skills are helping students engage more deeply with what they read, and think critically about the themes and the messages in the text.

Writing

In Writing, Year 6 students have been exploring the prefix mal- and how they can apply this to other base words to make new words. They have also been learning to understand that adding this prefix to other base words can change its meaning.

Students continued to use picture prompts to brainstorm and explore words and images while creating ‘seeds’ in their Writer’s Notebooks.

Year 6 students also began to look at poetry, and how they can use specific vocabulary to express feelings and emotions. Students cannot wait to share these with you!

Social and Emotional Learning / SWPBS

In SEL, Year 6 students explored building positive relationships and knowing when to ask for help. Students learnt about small and big problems, when to solve things independently, and when to seek support from a friend or trusted adult. They also discussed what makes a good friend and practised using respectful communication, including ‘I statements’. Students reflected on trust and courage when asking for help and identified people they can go to for support, reinforcing that asking for help is a strength.
