Reading
In Reading, Year 5 students have been working on the reading skills of Skimming and Scanning. Skimming and Scanning is an important skill for researching information. Students only have a short amount of time to find texts or websites relevant to their research and to find the information that they need. Knowing this skill will allow them to use their time efficiently and effectively.

Writing
During Writing, the Year 5 cohort have been working on writing information reports about countries. They have been researching key facts and organising their ideas into clear sections, focusing on structure, factual language, and presenting information in a logical way.
Alongside this, Year 5 students have been investigating Latin roots, such as /port/ (to carry) and /rupt/ (to break), helping them to better understand the meaning of unfamiliar words and expand their vocabulary. It has been wonderful to see students applying this knowledge to strengthen their writing and develop more precise and informative reports.

Maths
In Maths, Year 5 students have been learning about different strategies to help them solve multiplication problems. These strategies include using a number line, repeated addition, fact families and arrays.
To practise arrays, they created their own ‘Array City’. Within their city, they identified the corresponding fact families to help them understand the relationship between multiplication and division.

Inquiry
In Inquiry, the Year 5 cohort have been exploring Indigenous Peoples from around the world. They have been learning about diverse cultures and communities, including the Inuit, the Māori, the Orang Asli, the Ainu, the Sami and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples.
Through this inquiry, Year 5 students explored the unique traditions, histories, and connections to land that shape each group’s identity. They also reflected on the importance of respect, understanding, and celebrating cultural diversity. It has been wonderful to see the Year 5 cohort developing a deeper appreciation for Indigenous cultures both within Australia and around the world.

Social and Emotional Learning / SWPBS
In Social and Emotional Learning, Year 5 students have been learning about personal strengths. Personal strengths are positive character traits, skills or behaviours, like empathy, resilience, curiosity, teamwork and creativity, that help people feel energised and confident.
Learning about personal strengths helps build students’ self-esteem and enables them to manage challenges effectively. Students were asked to identify their own personal strengths and consider how these influence their day-to-day lives.

AUSLAN
In Auslan, Year 5 students have revised hand shapes and how they relate to 2D and 3D shapes. They looked at the hand movements needed to describe shape as well as how to show the size and shape of objects.
