Year 2 News

Reading
In Reading, Year 2 students have been learning to retell fiction texts by reading stories, discussing key elements such as who, what, where and when, and sequencing events in the correct order. This has helped strengthen their understanding of story structure and comprehension skills.
During Phonics, students have been revisiting long vowel “e” words, by practising how to read and spell words by using post it notes to fill in the missing sound, writing the words down on a whiteboard and writing them in sentences. It has been wonderful to see their confidence grow in both Reading and Phonics.

Year 2 students have been busily learning about boundary punctuation and the importance of it when writing sentences. Another area Year 2 students focused on was forming letters correctly and placing them on the correct lines when writing on dotted thirds.

In Maths, Year 2 students have been revising concepts in place value. They firstly wrote down a three digit number of their choice and then they represented it in as many ways as they could think of which included; placing it on a number line, writing it in words and drawing it. Students have been showing growth in their understanding of place value and have been confidently engaging in these activities.

Inquiry
In Inquiry, Year 2 students were introduced to the unit ‘Our Amazing Earth’ with a focus on seasons. They explored the four seasons through a fun hands-on activity using mystery bags, where they used their sense of touch to guess objects and discuss how they connect to each season. Through group discussions, students shared their thinking and began identifying clues that signal seasonal changes. They also watched a stimulus video, A Journey through the Seasons, and used a Think, Pair, Share strategy to discuss what happens as seasons change. Students learned that seasons happen during different times of the year with changes in weather and the environment, and explored how these changes influence what we wear. It has been fantastic to see their curiosity and engagement as they begin to understand the environment around them!

Students were reminded of coping strategies to keep them calm when facing these problems. They played a raft game on the basketball court. Circles were drawn to represent life rafts and if students were not in a raft, they had to wave their hand to show that they needed help, so their peers could help save them.
