Boarding House

- Mr Andrew Monk

Welcome to our 2024 Boarders.

It was wonderful to welcome our new trial boarders in Years 7, 8 and 9 this week. Starting boarding school can be a anxious experience, so the support of staff and current boarders was invaluable in making the transition smoother.

The Sunday afternoon arrival followed by a quick room setup and dinner and immersion into boarding life ran to clockwork. It was great to see our new induction program introduced this year help to foster friendships, introduce boarders to the local area, and provided time for staff to get to know the new boarders. Activities like our games night, trips in the Troopy, senior boarder-led activities, and assistance with subject selection for 2024, will undoubtedly help the boarders settle in comfortably and set them up for success.

It's also important to recognise and thank the dedicated staff members, Lise Lowe and Bailey Edwards, for their efforts in ensuring the boarders felt welcome and supported. Their contributions are truly appreciated in creating a positive boarding experience for these young students.

Wishing all the new boarders a successful and enriching journey at the College.

International boarders’ dinner

International boarding students hosted Mr Horne at the local Chinese restaurant for the College's first international dinner for 2023. Mr. Eric Gong and I also attended, and we look forward to more dinners and formal occasions of cultural celebration.

Holding the dinner in Hamilton, at our local Chinese restaurant, added a touch of local flavour to the evening. Our dinners recognise the cultural diversity in our boarding house and provide a time for international boarders to connect with themes from home. Led by our International Captain, Dominic Wong, the conversation flowed throughout the evening with boarders sharing stories about their homes and what they enjoy at the College. We also discussed new ideas to be brought into the Boarding House, including a karaoke machine, a Chinese tea set, Moon-cake festival, and a dumpling-making afternoon with Dom later this term.

Picaninny (Bainggug) Walk

Activities on the weekend are an important part of our boarding program. At times these activities are onsite, and other times we head off somewhere new. It is timely that we celebrate the beautiful weather in Hamilton with a walk in the local mountains. Picaninny (Bainggug), is a small mountain nestled next to Dunkeld. Boarders were driven to Dunkeld on Sunday to take in the fresh air, conquer a small mountain, and simply enjoy the sights and sounds of the local area. With the sun shining, and native flowers out, the staff and boarders enjoyed walking Bainggug with each other.
