SPOTLIGHT ON MYRNIONG LEARNING

Year 1

The class has focused on ‘Picture Graphs’ of our Pets.  They have been exploring data and collecting information in Mathematics.  The Year 1 students have been discussing and creating simple questions to collect information and then recorded the results in different graph forms.

Year 3

For their Home Learning, the students completed a book project called ‘Book in a Bag’. Their task was to read a book they hadn’t read before and then write a short summary of the book, which they attached to their bag. They decorated the other side with a scene from the book or their favourite part. Inside the bag, they put five items that represented the story or the characters from the book. Those items were many and varied, with a lot of thought put into them. Each item had to be accompanied by a card explaining how they related to the book or characters. Students had fun sharing them with the class when they practised telling us about their work without simply reading what they had written.

Some examples were an alarm clock because the main character wakes at 8 o’clock, an orange representing the sun that was painted at the end of the story ‘The Boy Who Painted the Sun’, a fluffy rabbit that represented warmth, safety and comfort for a character, a world map to represent the journey of a whale, a band-aid for the character who got hurt and a cosy jumper with a llama on it for the story ‘Dharma the Llama’. That is only a mere few, there were too many to mention, but it was a fun and engaging way to share students’ reading comprehension.

Year 4

In Mathematics, the students have been reading and interpreting temperature using digital and analogue thermometers.  They have particularly enjoyed looking at weather trends over a week, gathering morning and afternoon data.

Year 5

This week, students included Father’s Day into our Inquiry curriculum – we made edible ‘Space Aliens’ and moon rock statues for the students’ fathers.

HANDWRITING WORKSHOP

Many thanks to Lea Hudson from WDHS for running a successful handwriting workshop on Tuesday afternoon. Unfortunately, we were not able to record the workshop, but Lea has left some information at the Junior Campus reception for interested parents.  We will look to run another session with Lea in 2024.

FUNDRAISERS

Last week, we had some enterprising Junior School students run fundraisers for wonderful causes.

Our Junior school Captains, Yolanda O’Sullivan and Arshita Woosantia, ran a book swap to raise money for the Indigenous Literacy Foundation.  Over two lunchtimes, they raised $240.00.

Year 3 students Maggie Wallis, Anika Nelson and Sammie Price ran a homemade friendship bracelet sale to raise funds for research into children’s cancer.  The brightly coloured wristbands were a real hit with students.  The girls raised $100.00 for a great cause.

Compassion is one of the College’s five core values.  It refers to the empathetic and sympathetic concern for the wellbeing of others.  It involves recognising the challenges faced by others and the desire to support them. We associate compassion with acts of kindness.

HOCKEY RESULTS

Division 5 Black Panthers went down 2-0 to Coleraine Maroon in the elimination semifinal on Saturday. The team played well and had several scoring opportunities.  Best on ground were Harriet King and Olive Monk.

Division 4 College Foxes were too strong for College Wolves in the elimination semifinal on Saturday. The 6-1 scoreline was a fair indication of the match, with Foxes dominating the possession.  Freddie Milne scored three and was joined on the goal scorer’s sheet by Kirav Patel, Lachlan Reid and Maggie Mercer. Tommy Brown scored for the Wolves.

This weekend’s matches:

Division 4 Foxes v Demons - 1.30 pm at Pedrina Park
