Grade 5/6
Camp at Sovereign Hill
"Are we there yet?" was asked multiple times on the drive to Ballarat and in around two hours, we were. After assigning cabins and settling in, it was time to start our day's activities. From candle dipping to lolly making demonstrations and a version of the gold game (of which our students were very familiar!!), day 1 was off to a good start! However the highlight of day 1 had to be the sound and light show, Aura, an immersive 90-minute theatre experience using 3D technology that follows gold from its creation through to its discovery, right up until the current day.
On day 2, our booked group-activities didn't begin until 1:30pm, so we allowed the students some free-time after breakfast to explore the sites of Sovereign Hill. Some spent up big in the lolly shop, general store and post office, whilst others panned for gold, trying to make their own riches! In the afternoon, we watched a gold pouring demonstration and did two mine tours. Being so far under ground in the dark was daunting for some and exciting for others, but amazing nonetheless.
On our final night, students took part in trivia, with minute-to-win-it games in between each round. Congratulations to joint winners, Dees Birds and Glenn's Cribbb!
Weary eyed after a busy day & night, it was off to bed before our final day, where students were transported back to an 1850's classroom.
Thank you to our fabulous 5/6 students for making it a memorable 3 days, for all the right reasons! You did your teachers and Andersons Creek very proud!
