Book Week this week!

This week is book week. We are so excited about all the fun that will be taking place in the classrooms and at lunchtime throughout the week in celebration of Book Week. We have decided that we will not have a dress-up day this year, as we have a dress-up day planned for our 150th celebrations on September 1st, as well as the last day of term for sports day and we are mindful of not asking too much of our parents. There are still lots of fun activities throughout the week to celebrate Book Week and encourage the love of reading.

One of our major activities taking place this year again is our Buninyong Book Swap Bonanza. We are asking all students to donate a book (or more if you would like) from home that they have read, is in good condition, and they no longer want but know that someone else would. Teachers will be setting up a ‘stall’ on Thursday across the campus for students to come and choose a book that has been donated. Students will get the chance to browse and choose a book to take home and keep (no cost involved).  Everyone will go home with a book! If students could have their donated book to school by Tuesday 22nd August, that would be fantastic. If you have any questions, please contact Ana via email – Anastasia.anderson@education.vic.gov.au

Yesterday, we had Bianca from Leigh Catchment Group come out as part of our Book Week celebrations. After reading Naturopolis, students had the opportunity to find and ID water bugs, just like in the story. Students loved ‘taking a closer look’ and identifying some of the natural living bugs found in our local catchment area and discussing some interesting facts.

If any families are interested in joining a local Landcare group, please contact Bianca at bianca@leighcatchmentgroup.or or check out Leigh Catchment Group on Facebook or Instagram for upcoming events and workshops.

Science Week Celebration - Day at Buninyong Campus

Last Friday we had our Scotsburn Science Day down at the Buninyong Campus. Students completed 3 activities in their Family Groups, including making sherbet with Mr Walsh, volcanoes with Mrs Robinson, and coding with Mr Morgan. There were smiles and enjoyment all day, and the students worked amazingly well in their small groups. Well done!

No Scotsburn Assembly this Friday

Unfortunately, we will have to postpone our Scotsburn Assembly that was planned for this Friday. We have a few changes to our schedule which have been unavoidable. The next assembly that our parents can attend is the massive 150 years celebrations at Buninyong next Friday.

Scotsburn Father’s Day Stall - Next Wednesday August 30

Our annual Father’s Day stall will be held on Wednesday 30th August this year (to avoid a clash with the 150 celebrations on the Friday!).

This is an opportunity for our students to learn more about gratitude and give thanks to the dads and male role models in their lives. All gifts will be $5.

Students are offered the opportunity to come along and purchase one gift for their dad or significant male in their life. After all grades have been through, an announcement will be put over for any students who may wish to buy a second gift (for a stepdad, grandfather, etc.) to come and purchase another item.

We will run the stall in the shed, first thing in the morning. Any parents who would like to pop in and volunteer some help at the stall, we would love to see you.

Parent Volunteering and Assistance

Thanks to those who have volunteered their assistance for our various programs and activities, below are our helpers for this week.

SC1 Learning Snapshot

A huge thank you to all parents for supporting your child’s reading at home. Each night your child should be coming home with two books to read and practise the skills they have been learning at school. You will also notice that a ‘Sounds Write’ activity will be sent home weekly to support your child’s decoding, a key skill for learning to read that involves taking apart the sounds in words (segmenting) and blending sounds together.

In Maths, we have been learning about fractions. Our key focus will be on identifying half, a quarter, and eighths of an object as well as a collection. Students have also been loving our automaticity game at the beginning of each lesson that incorporates a number skill such as addition, subtraction, or place value.

In Writing, we are learning about persuasive language. When students arrived at school on Monday all their chairs had quit! Students are writing a letter to the chairs persuading them to please let us use them again. Here is one of SC1’s letters…

Dear Chairs,

I am so sorry I treated you badly. I need you to come back. I need a spot to sit. I will take care of you. I have sore knees and I am sorry for drawing on you. I will clean you. I will stop putting my grubby feet on you. My butt misses you, please come back.

I am sure with great persuasive letters like that, the chairs will let us use them again.

Have a terrific week.

Thanks.

Ana and Kirsty.

SC3 Learning Snapshot

Well, we sure have been going through a busy period in SC3 lately. Between VSSS rehearsals, Energy Breakthrough training, iCAS assessments, Bluelight Dash meetings, BioCATS excursion, Science Day, and preparation for 150 year celebrations, it has been hard to keep up. It is so wonderful that students in SC3 are taking up every opportunity presented to them with open arms and such enthusiasm!

Within the classroom, students have used their inferential skills to write a news report about the crime scene in SC3. They used both the clues provided to them along with their prior knowledge, to make some educated guesses and assumptions about what had taken place. We can’t wait to discover what actually happened.

In Maths, students have continued to demonstrate voice and agency in their learning, using their proficiency scales to create goals in the area of decimals and percentages.

On a final note, the Compass event for final payment for our Melbourne Camp in Week 2 of Term 4 is now open. Please let me know if you are having any trouble with the process on Compass.

Have another brilliant week,

Jarrod

Scotsburn Intercampus Travel

At times, Scotsburn students will be transported between campuses in order to attend classes, assemblies, special days and events. On most occasions, transport required through the day will be by bus and occasionally private car for smaller groups of students. Parents may be asked to drop off or collect from the Buninyong campus if sessions are at the beginning or ending of a day.

We will always let you know of any upcoming travel arrangements via our newsletter, Compass, or via phone for smaller, more specific travel arrangements.

If you ever have any questions or concerns regarding intercampus travel, please contact your child’s teacher.
