CURRICULUM FOCUS

In Mathematics this week, we are continuing our development of multiplication strategies by using vertical multiplication to solve  problems.

VOCABULARY

Vertical multiplication: A multiplication strategy where the numbers being multiplied are lined up above each other in place value columns. Each  on the digit bottom row is multiplied by each digit on the top row, and then placed on separate rows underneath. These numbers are then added together to find the total.

ACTIVITIES YOU CAN DO AT HOME TO SUPPORT YOUR CHILD'S LEARNING

Have your child solve some multiplication problems using the vertical multiplication method. They could generate their numbers using a dice from a board game, playing cards, dominos, or by choosing their own. Have them work at their ability level, then move on from there once they are comfortable.

Example: start by doing 1 x 2 digit multiplication, then move on to 2 x 2 digit, then 2 x 3 digit etc.
