Student and Community Learning and Wellbeing

Kinder connections

On Tuesday the 29th of August we had our final kinder connections for 2023. Heathmont East pre school visited 5AP and worked with our level 5 students in the classroom. Students listened to a story together and worked on some fine motor activities with each other. We look forward to welcoming our enrolled 2024 students to HEPS next term for their transition sessions.

Writing workshop Level 2 and 3

On Thursday the 7th of September some of our Level 2 and 3 students participated in a writing workshop with author Louise Park. Louise has written over 500 books and shared her extensive knowledge on how to take students writing to the 'next level' with her online writers workshop. Students engaged with other schools from around the state and worked together to improve their writing skills. Awesome work level 2 and 3!

ICAS

The quickest way to access your child's ICAS results is online, using your TAP-ID and PIN.

How to get your TAP-ID and PIN if your child has sat ICAS in a previous year

Find your TAP-ID and PIN on the back of a previous year’s ICAS certificate. Note, your child’s TAP-ID and PIN could have changed if they’ve moved schools.

Alternatively, you can request it using this form.

How to get your TAP-ID and PIN if this is the first time your child has sat ICAS

You can request it using this form 10 business days after the final sitting day of your child’s ICAS subject.

Alternatively,  you can find the TAP-ID and PIN on your child’s certificate which will be sent to their school approximately 4 weeks after the  final sitting day for each subject (except Writing which is 7-9 weeks). Your school will distribute this to you at their discretion.

Maths Olympiad and Explorer programs

Over the next week students will sit their final Olympiad and Explorer tasks. The level 5 and 6 students have been busy with many extra curricular activities including hoop time and 3 way learning conferences so the date that they sit this test will need to be flexible. If your child is absent on the day that we sit the test over the next week they will be able to make it up. Explorer students will complete the task within their classrooms, assessment papers have been handed to classroom teachers. We look forward to celebrating our teams accomplishments including ICAS achievements during term 4 at assembly. More information to come.

High ability and Gifted seminars for parents

Identifying Gifted Students – Assessment Tools other than WISC Thursday 7th September,  07:30 PM – 09:00 PM (ONLINE) The WISC-V (Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children Fifth Edition for children 6 – 16 years, 11 months) and the WIPPSI-IV (Wechsler Preschool & Primary Scale of Intelligence Fourth Edition for children 2.5 – 7 years, 7 months) are generally well regarded as providing an accurate measure of academic potential of students, and frequently used to diagnose giftedness.

However, the cost involved and the availability of practitioners (they can only be administered by a registered educational psychologist) puts them out of reach for some families. Or perhaps you have been advised that there is a “2 year wait” for testing!

This seminar will cover the alternative measures available to identify giftedness: Progressive Achievement Testing (PAT tests), Gifted Rating Scales, behavioural observations, and common characteristics of gifted children to diagnose giftedness.

Puzzles and games provide a platform for cognitive growth by stimulating critical thinking, problem-solving, and decision-making skills. Children (and families) can strategize, plan, and adapt within the context of games and puzzles, while also fostering social interaction, encouraging communication, cooperation, and healthy competition when played with peers, family, or friends.”
