Students in Years 5 & 6 have been working on self-portraits in Art class. Japanese Room News

こんにちわ、かぞく

Hello Families,

In Japanese classes over the last four weeks of term, students from Foundation to Year 6 have been focusing on writing in Hiragana as much as possible. This has been demonstrated by labelling pictures of ourselves (Foundation) to writing descriptions about animals (Year 1/2), anime characters (Year 5/6) and ourselves (Year 3/4).

In Foundation, students have been learning about the parts of the body through singing and dancing to ‘Heads, Shoulders, Knees and Toes’ and playing Josie Sensei Says (Simon Says game). We have demonstrated our learning by labelling a self-portrait with as many body parts as we can – and by using as much Hiragana writing as possible. (Work by: Nevin)

Year 1/2s have been writing a description of a favourite animal. They included learning to write its name, what colours it was and whether it was a big or small animal. Again, students were encouraged to write as much of their text in Hiragana as possible to foster familiarity and recognition of the script (Zoey's work is attached).

Year 3/4s have spent time building up their knowledge of the simple sentences used in a

Jikoshoukai – self-introduction. They introduce themselves, tell their age, how many people are in their family and who those people are. We have begun recording ourselves to reflect on our accent and pronunciation when speaking in Japanese as well as our written work (Gio's work is attached).

Year 5/6 have put the finishing touches on their descriptions of their favourite Anime and Pokemon characters. They have focused on writing in the Japanese style of right to left and top to bottom. They have paid attention to detail when writing with a combination of the three Japanese scripts.

It has been wonderful to see and hear students using more Japanese vocabulary and writing in the script more freely!

Students who have passed their Yellow Belt in Hiragana and would like to see if they qualify for the Level 1 Japanese badge – please come and check the criteria on the window of the Japanese room or come and see me at the Japanese Club – 1.45 to 2.15pm on Monday during lunchtime 😊

みんなさん, よくできました。

Minnasan, yokudekimashita. Well Done Everyone!
