In a previous newsletter we showcased the work being covered in the Prep - Year 3 classes. This week we are putting the spotlight on some of the learning experiences in the Year 4 to Year 6 classes.
Last Thursday our Year 4s attended a matinee performance of the Thomas Carr Musical “Into the Woods” . They came back giving the show rave reviews.
Our students in Year 3 - 6 have embarked on a new spelling initiative, which is in line with the phonics based approach we take to spelling in the junior years. We are basing our work around the ‘Sound Waves’ program, which is aligned with research on the best practices for reading and spelling instruction. The program has explicit and engaging lessons. The four key areas required for reading and spelling success: phonemic awareness, synthetic phonics, morphology and etymology, are all covered in the program. You can see a Year 5 class being introduced to this week’s ‘sound’, through a series of interactive activities. These are followed up with individual activities which the students complete independently.
The Year 6 students are doing a project called Bizarre Bazaar. This project aims to teach the students about running a small business. The children need to become innovative and make appealing products to sell to younger students. The money raised from the project will be given to a Catholic charity. Some of the products the Year 6’s will sell include lip scrub, lucky dips, cupcakes, chocolate dipped marshmallows and many more fascinating items. The students will be selling their products in the Hall on Monday 11th September in Week 10. Below are photos of some of the students with products, advertising or prototypes.
