ASSISTANCE FOR ISOLATED CHILDREN (AIC)

AIC aims to assist the families of primary, secondary and under-16-year-old tertiary students who are unable to attend an appropriate government school on a daily basis because of geographic isolation.

An appropriate government school is one that offers the student’s level of study or, if the student has special health-related or educational needs, one that provides access to the facilities, programmes and environment required for those needs.

A student may be regarded as geographically isolated from appropriate schooling if one of the following rules are met:

Rule 1 – The distance between the principal family home and the nearest appropriate state school is at least 56 kilometres via the shortest practicable route.

Rule 2 – The distance between the principal family home and the nearest appropriate state school (via the shortest practicable route) is at least 16 kilometres AND the distance between the principal family home and the nearest available transport service to the nearest appropriate state school is at least 4.5 kilometres via the shortest practicable route.

Rule 3 – If Geographic Isolation Rules 1 or 2 do not apply but there are other circumstances that make it impracticable for the student to travel between the family home and the nearest state school on at least 20 school days of the year then Geographic Isolation Rule 3 may apply.  Evidence must be provided.
