Visual Arts

Carly, Suzie & Chloe

Hello Aitken Hill Primary!

Welcome to Term 4 in Visual Arts. This term has some slight staffing changes, with Suzie having returned from maternity leave. She is excited to be teaching Years 3-6 on Monday through to Wednesdays. Chloe will continue teaching 3-6s on Thursday and Fridays. Prep-2s will remain the same, with Carly enthusiastically teaching each class throughout the week!

A huge THANK YOU to all of the students who entered the Aitken Hill PS Art Sustainability Sculpture Competition! The work was innovative, colourful and all entries made it difficult to choose a winner - so we picked several! Students received their certificates and prizes at the end of Term 3. Congratulation to our winners: Ayra A. 3/4E, Seba A. 3/4H, Reeshita T. 3/4B, Shreya S. 1/2C and M. Ibrahim K. Prep E. Honourable mention to Rebecca M.K. 1/2H and Vanessa A. 1/2H who created a Stationary Fridge and Candy Vending Machine.

FOUNDATION COMMUNITY

This term the Preps are exploring the use of 2D and 3D shapes and their forms within artworks. They will be evaluating their current cutting, tracing and colouring-in technique against a rubric criteria, using Art related vocabulary to reflect and set goals for areas of improvement. Students will be introduced to printing techniques and marking marks on paper using paint, so please don't forget to send a labelled art smock or old shirt to keep at school in the Art room if you haven't done so already.

1/2 COMMUNITY

The 1/2 community has an exciting unit this term, learning all about mythical creatures and sculpting techniques. They have experimented with various paper curling methods to create unicorn manes and tails and an accordion folding method to create the body of a dragon. Students have also learnt some basic sculpting techniques with Paper Magiclay, creating their own mer-animal hybrids, these will be painted next lesson and shared in the following newsletter. Looking ahead, students are excited to start designing and creating clay sculptures of their own imaginary creatures. Please don't forget to send a labelled art smock or old shirt to keep at school in the Art room. Thanks to those who already have.

3/4 COMMUNITY

The Year 3&4 Communities are excited to be exploring food through the world of art! They’ve started the term off developing their drawing skills, breaking down some sweet food images into basic geometric shapes and experimenting with drawing their 3D forms. They’ve practiced these skills and chosen their best piece to recreate on A3 paper, and to add colour using soft pastels. Students have found using soft pastels fun, but a bit of a challenge to achieve the same effect as they might get with pencils. They have been encouraged to persevere and experiment with different materials and reminded that it takes practise to use new materials successfully! They will continue to build on these images throughout the term, by creating a sculpture of them using clay and layering their work with paint. The term is looking to get messy, and we hope to see students bringing their art smocks/old shirts in to protect their school uniform.

5/6 COMMUNITY

The Year 5&6 Communities have continued to engage with self-portraits by examining a variety of famous artworks, asking questions, and discovering some of the reasons and ways, artists often engage with self-portraits. They have begun recreating their own self-portraits that represent different emotions through photography. Students have chosen one image to be their focus piece for a colourful artwork they will work on producing in the coming weeks. They will be using acetate sheets, markers, paints and paint pens and we look forward to sharing the images of their completed pieces in the next newsletter! For now, please enjoy their progress shots.

ZART STUDENT ART COMPETITION!

Zart are once again running their Student Art Competition with some fantastic prizes! This year it’s Post Card Art. The size of the art needs to be A6, but the theme can be anything, so it’s a great opportunity to get creative! Students interested in entering the competition can find more information by clicking the image below. If you need any support entering your artwork, we will be happy to help, just ask!

ART SMOCKS

A reminder to send a labelled art smock (an old shirt or purchased one) with your child to school. We can keep these in the art smock tubs for use with paint and clay to protect uniforms. Thank you to the students and their families who have already done this.

We are always extremely proud of Aitken Hill students' creativity and expression through artwork and can't wait to see their finished pieces.

Thank you,

Carly, Suzie & Chloe
