Work Experience is available to students that are 15 years old+. Please drop into either careers Hubs for further information.
SWL is available to students doing a VET Course in their VCE/VM Pathway. See the Work Placement Programs advisor.
SBAT’s are available to Year 10 -12 students through our Headstart Program (Aaron Patton) by application and availability only.

We are constantly being introduced to new trends, technologies, and changes in the economy. This means it’s more important than ever to future-proof your career and stay ahead of what’s happening in your industry.
Here is a list of the most in demand jobs and skills in Australia, empowering you to make the best choices for your career.
Cybersecurity
The emergence of advanced technologies has created opportunities for cybercriminals to target their victims in new ways. For instance, Australia experienced a 13% increase in cybercrime reports in the 2021-2022 financial year.
Cybersecurity is a varied field with many in demand jobs for the future, including:
● ICT Programmer
● Cyber Security Lead
● ICT Security Specialist
● Network Analyst
Although it’s not always necessary to have a degree if you want to work in Cybersecurity, it can be very advantageous. Alternatively, the Graduate Diploma in IT (Cyber Security and Networks) and the Graduate Certificate in Cyber Security and Networks are also an option.
Employment in Database and Systems Administrators and ICT Security roles are projected to grow by 38.9% between 2021 and 2026.
Aged Care
There will always be demand for health professionals, but specialist skills are required when attending to the unique needs of older people. Australia also faces an ageing population – by 2066, 21% to 23% of the total population is projected to be aged 65 and over.
Some of the best jobs for the future in aged care include:
● Home aged care worker
● Residential support worker
● Facility manager
● Policy analyst
● Program coordinator
There are multiple pathways for healthcare workers to expand their knowledge and skills in aged care. Certificate and Diploma courses are designed for students to develop the specialist skills needed for practical work.
Employment in Aged and Disabled Care is predicted to grow by 28% between 2021 and 2026.
Education
There are currently workforce shortages in schools across Australia, creating opportunities for those considering a career in education. Current teachers can also develop skills that are in demand to increase their employability, including learning how to integrate technology into the classroom and provide inclusive education to students with special needs.
There are many career paths to explore other than being a primary or high school teacher, including:
● Special needs teacher
● Learning designer
● Curriculum designer
● Career counsellor
● Teaching assistant
There are a number of pathways for those looking to change to a career in education. A certificate and diploma of Early Childhood Education. A Bachelor of Early, Primary or Secondary Education. If you already have a recognised bachelor’s degree (in any discipline), you can complete a Master of Teaching.
Employment in Education and Training is predicted to grow by 13.4% between 2021 and 2026.
Software Development and Computer Science
Software and Applications Programmers were ranked second in Australia’s top 20 jobs in demand, with high employment growth expected between 2022 and 2027. As we continue to rely on technology in our day-to-day lives, there’ll be a need for professionals with advanced computer knowledge.
Some of the best computer science jobs for the future include:
● Software developer/engineer
● Web designer
● Computer scientist
● Systems engineer
● Network analyst
Although not strictly necessary for all computer science jobs, a degree will increase your chances of succeeding in this field.
Employment is expected to grow by 27% between 2021 and 2026.
Nursing and Healthcare
Registered nurses are ranked first in Australia’s top 20 jobs in demand, with a number of other healthcare professions also expected to grow in demand between 2022 and 2027. The emergence of new diseases, new technologies, and an ageing population are just some of the reasons healthcare jobs are in demand.
Here’s a list of healthcare careers you could consider:

● Occupational therapist
● Physiotherapist
● Health services manager
The pathway to starting a healthcare career will depend on the specific field you want to pursue. You can explore a variety of Certificate, Diploma & Bachelor health degrees.
Employment in Health Care and Social Assistance is predicted to grow by 15.8% between 2021 and 2026.
Data Analytics
Data analytics was reported as one of Australia’s Emerging Occupations in 2020, growing 61% from 2015 to 2019. As the amount of data we can access grows and technology progresses, data analysis will continue to be a skill that’s in demand.
Data analysts can work across a range of industries in roles including:
● Data analyst
● Sales analyst
● Website analyst
● Technical business analyst
● Data engineer
The pathway for Data Analytics includes Certificate, Diploma and Bachelor’s degrees.
Employment for Actuaries, Mathematicians and Statisticians is predicted to grow by 11% between 2021 and 2026.
Web development
Whether we’re online shopping or checking our bank accounts, most of us have become accustomed to doing business online. Web development plays a key role in the design and build of websites and is an in-demand job in Australia.
A few web development jobs you could find yourself in include:

● Software developer
Web development pathways include Certificates, Diplomas and Bachelor’s degrees.
Employment for Multimedia Specialists and Web Developers is predicted to grow by 13.7% between 2021 and 2026.
Digital Communication
Professionals in digital communication use various media forms to effectively communicate messages. As new forms of media continue to be created, effective digital communication is likely to become a skill that’s in demand across many industries.
Some digital communication roles you could explore include:
● Digital strategist
● Digital marketing specialist
● Social media specialist
● Digital content producer
Although a degree isn’t always necessary for digital communication jobs, it can provide a foundation of knowledge and help you stand out when applying for jobs.

Climate Change Pathways

Do you love the outdoors?
Have you considered studying outdoor education or outdoor recreation? You can study outdoor recreation at TAFE institutes, private providers and via a traineeship at outdoor education centres such as Camp Coolamatong, Victoria and Outward Bound, NSW. You can also study outdoor education and outdoor recreation at university. The following are examples of courses you can explore:

Austin Health - Work Experience (2024 Year 10 students, 15+)
Austin Health partners with Banyule Nillumbik Local Learning and Employment Network (BNLLEN) to coordinate their workplace learning programs for secondary school students. The Work Experience Program targets typically year 10 students. Work experience offers the opportunity for a ‘first taste’ of the health industry where students can observe a workplace in action.
How to apply
Students must be over the age of 15 at the time of their placement.

goIT Girls STEM Work Experience Program (aimed at female students in years 10 & 11) - Virtual Experience 2023
Tata Consultancy Services’ (TCS) goIT Girls is inspiring women in STEM and challenging stereotypes again this year. In its ninth year running, this free week-long work experience program will have students learn all about the growing number of jobs available in STEM as future innovators, problem solvers and technology professionals! Participants will have the opportunity to meet with and be mentored by inspiring senior executives from the tech industry.
About goIT Girls work experience program
TCS’ goIT Girls is a week-long work experience program aimed at female students in Years 10 and 11. At TCS, we are empowering Australian students with the skills they need to be ready for the workplace of the future.
Participants meet senior executives from TCS and its client organisations, who provide insight into the various STEM roles that exist across the business spectrum with the goal of inspiring a new generation of innovators, problem solvers and technology professionals. The aim is to provide insight into the technology industry and challenge gender as well as occupational stereotypes.
goIT Girls has four areas of focus:
- Provide insight into the technology industry, TCS and the application of technology in our client’s business.
- Challenge gender stereotypes by showcasing women in STEM as role models
- Build skills by solving a simulated business case through the application of technology
- Enhance confidence and employability skills
Virtual - 13th November 2023 - 16th November 2023
Eligibility
In 2023 the program will provide opportunities for 100+ young women who are curious about a career in technology from around Australia to participate. Students do not need any prior experience with technology to participate in the program. There is no cost for your school or the student to take part in goIT Girls.

Parliament Of Victoria: Work Experience Expression Of Interest 2024 (15+)
Expressions of interest to complete a work experience placement at the Parliament of Victoria in terms 1 and 2, 2024 are now open. Students can choose between two programs, Sitting and Services. Parliamentary Sitting placements provide the opportunity to see the law-making process up close. Students will go behind the scenes with the staff who directly support Parliament sittings, to get a deeper understanding of our democratic processes. Parliamentary Services placements offer a variety of opportunities that can be matched with a broad range of student interests and career goals, including business management, facilities management and maintenance, community engagement and broadcasting, and hospitality. Placements are open to students who are 15 years or over at the time of the placement.

Expressions of interest will close at 5:00 pm on Friday 12 January. Interested students will be notified of the outcome of their expression of interest no later than Friday 2nd February.

Nangak Tamboree Wildlife Sanctuary - Work Experience (2024 Year 9 & 10 students,15+)
Nangak Tamboree Wildlife Sanctuary offers engaging Work Experience placements for students in Year 9 and Year 10. Their Work Experience Program is designed to foster new skills in young people, create an awareness and appreciation of the conservation and biodiversity management industry and demonstrate the breadth of career opportunities in environmental science, research and education.
Successful applicants may assist in the following areas of the Sanctuary:
- land management
- plant production
- education
- biodiversity
- marketing, promotion & interpretation
- office & administration
- workshops & tours
The Nangak Tamboree Wildlife Sanctuary cannot offer any opportunities to work with animals.
Work Experience placements run for one week from Monday to Friday on pre-selected dates throughout the year. Normal working hours are from 9.30am until 4.00pm. As part of your placement, you will be required to undertake some structured learning activities.
There are 4 places available for each of the placement weeks. A maximum of two students can come from the same school for the same placement week.
These dates are subject to change based on other Sanctuary activities happening at the time.

Swinburne University - Work Experience (2024 Year 9 & 10 students, 15+)
Swinburne welcomes students in Year 9 and 10 to participate in work experience at the university. These one-week placements give students the opportunity to:
- develop employability skills
- explore possible career options
- understand employer expectations
- build self-understanding, maturity, independence and self-confidence.
Their work experience programs run in the following areas: Applied Mathematics, Astronomy and Astrophysics, or Biotechnology and Biochemistry.
Applications for their next intake of work experience programs will open in January 2024. They encourage early applications as there are limited places, and places are usually filled by March.

Melbourne Symphony Orchestra (MSO) - Work Experience 2024 (15+)
MSO Work Experience offers students an opportunity for meaningful, well-rounded engagement with MSO as a major performing arts company, as well as the arts sector more broadly.
Placements are run in a group format, with a strong focus on arts administration. During their time with the MSO, students will have the opportunity to meet with musicians and staff, mix with MSO’s industry-leading artistic planning team, observe orchestral rehearsals and explore Melbourne’s arts precinct.
Most of all, students will come away from their placement with a broad understanding of the role played by the MSO – as a cornerstone of Melbourne’s rich cultural heritage – in the Victorian and Australian performing arts industries.
How to apply: MSO welcome applications by all students attending Secondary School in Victoria aged 15 years+ as of the placement date. The MSO can accept up to 30 students per placement and will hold two placements which run for three days:
- Tuesday 25 June to Thursday 27 June 2024, 10am-4pm or
- Tuesday 27 August to Thursday 29 August 2024, 10am-4pm

Victorian Opera - Work Experience (2024 Year 10 students, 15+)
Applications for Victorian Opera’s 2024 Work Experience Program will open Monday 12 February (Week 3, Term 1), and close Friday 19 April 2024, 5.00pm, unless places are filled prior to this date. Their Work Experience Program gives Year 10 students the chance to work with other like-minded students whilst being mentored by leading professionals in the performing arts industry. At the conclusion of the week, students present their own production plan to the Company Executive, covering design, direction, company management and budget.
The 2024 Work Experience Program will run from Monday 22 July to Friday 26 July (Week 2, Term 3), coinciding with the last week of studio rehearsals of our Grand Lyric Opera, La Rondine by Puccini.

University of Melbourne (Faculty of Science) - Work Experience (2024 Year 10 students, 15+)
Program Structure
The University of Melbourne Year 10 Work Experience Program provides students with a sample of activities that are part of a career in STEM including conducting experiments, attending seminars, collaborating with others on research projects, and presenting their own findings. Participants discover what it is like to be a scientist, meet like-minded friends and scientific role models, and also get a taste of university life.
The program is divided into a number of science discipline streams. Students must nominate their top three preferences as part of the application process. During the week, students will be hosted by academics working in their chosen discipline, and also spend some time interacting with students from other groups.
