Movie Premiere
The Calrossy…. Our Light and Life documentary project is coming to fruition after more than a year of interviewing, researching and delving into the archives. We have uncovered previously unseen archival images that have been restored to their former glory. We have interviewed past principals and heard from Alumni and one thing that stands out through this process is the story of resilience. Calrossy has faced numerous challenges from World Wars to global epidemic’s and from the interviews one thing stands out, our staff have always been committed to quality education and supporting the needs of their students.
We invite you to purchase a ticket and join us at the Capitol Theatre Tamworth on Friday 15th September.
RUOK Day
7-9 will host an RUOK Day this Wednesday, September 13 in support of suicide prevention and mental health. These students are being asked to wear their sports uniform and yellow socks/ribbon, with $10 lunch packages available as a fundraiser(sausage sandwich, drink and zooper dooper). It is the brainchild of Year 7-9 Captain, Bronte Gillan, who wanted to help contribute to the wellbeing culture of the school and raise awareness around mental health issues.
The guest speaker, who will also talk to the Year 10 students on the Brisbane Street Campus, is Daniel 'D Minor' Harvey. He is an award-winning 24-year-old international recording and performing artist from Sydney Australia whose original music has captured the hearts of millions worldwide. He has an inspiring story of resilience. D Minor’s talent was evident at an early age when he began penning rap lyrics while growing up in a turbulent family life. At the age of 11, he found himself homeless with his twin brother, which became the inspiration for his first hit single Concrete Pillow, where he tells of sleeping next to bakeries for warmth and shuffling between foster homes and refuges.
Year 10 Commerce Market Day
Last week our Year 10 Commerce students put their learning into action, when they had to bring a business idea to life and market and manage a stall selling their goods. This allows the students to put into practice the theory of the syllabus.
Glen Innes Beef Extravaganza
Calrossy is celebrating an amazing effort by our Cattle team on the weekend at the Colin Say Beef Extravaganza held at Glen Innes.
The students did an amazing job, we had three Year 9 students, ten Year 8 students and Hugo Bloomfield was our sole Year 7 representative.
The School purchased two steers back in March at a sale that then allowed them to enter the Colin Say Shootout. This steer won which was a value of $2000 just for the prizemoney. The same steer then went on to win his steer class and Champion School steer and then Champion school exhibit. He then went up against the open steer class where breeders and agents all enter animals. He just missed out on winning Grand Champion exhibit. Audrey Bower led the steer to success and came home with four Champion ribbons. Audrey also placed second in the junior judging and third in her school parader class. Other notable achievements include;
- Hayley Hodges led her heifer in the Limousin State of origin and made the top five and this heifer Minnie also won her class.
- Grace Newcombe won her parader class and came third with her steer and won a set of leather leads for her efforts and a school parader.
- Evy Walsh came second in her parader class.
- Eve Maloney came fourth in her parader class.
- Stirling Wheatley came fifth in his parader class.
- Amelia Miller came fifth with her home bred steer and fourth in her paraders.
- Ellie McCulloch came third with her steer and second in her parader class.
- Hugo came third in his parader class and won the best worker for all school students.
- Issy Wheatley came third with her carcass heifer.
- Tegan Rhodes came fourth in her parader class.
- Jock Barwick received the teachers hard working award for always helping out other students.
- Regan Banks won third with her steer in a very tough class.
It was an outstanding effort with the carcass results yet to come in, Calrossy is placed second in the most successful school competition, but we are hoping our steers will hang up well. Results for the carcass competition are announced next Monday night.
A big thanks to the staff involved, Kathy De Jong, James Forsyth and Bron Nielsen for coming to help.
Seniors Rugby Night
Thank you to everyone who came out to support the Seniors Rugby Night at Scully Park last Friday. The atmosphere was electric, and the standard of rugby was set by the Junior School students who ran out with such pride and supported the pink sock theme for the evening. Thank you to our P & F volunteers who cooked the BBQ, Boarding staff and students who manned the gates and canteen and Junior School students who ran the water for the games. Along with our Alumni who also showed their support and encouraged the students on and off the field.
We would like to also mention the volunteers from Serendipity Tamworth who came along to support but who do so much work across our community raising awareness and funds that stay locally supporting local women.
Our event raised $3000 and the night was a fitting send off for the Yr. 12 students who played their last game for Calrossy and have given their all for the rugby program over their time at School.
Congratulations to everyone involved on a fantastic community building night !
Operation Christmas Child
Calrossy has supported the initiative providing international relief by Samaritan’s Purse for many years.
Each year members of our school community combine to pack boxes for children in the world who would not otherwise receive a Christmas gift.
The Boarding community has been very active in this area of service. This year Junior and Secondary day school classes are being encouraged to participate also.
Shoe boxes are available from BSC and WCC receptions and the Boarding Office, along with a brochure’s explaining what items that can be placed in the boxes.
We would encourage anyone interested to collect and return the boxes by Friday 20th of October.
