Exploring Poetry

Throughout Term 3, students in Team 3/4 have been exploring all things poetry! They have read, analysed and written different poetry forms, as well as learnt different ways to organise poetry and language features to engage the audience.

Students learnt that poetry is a form of storytelling and that poets use a range of methods to organise their writing; stanzas, line breaks, rhythm and rhyme patterns, repetition, syllabification, punctuation and pauses.

Our budding poets also explored different poetic devices commonly used to enhance writing and connect with the audience, including; Alliteration, Onomatopoeia, Spoonerisms, Neologisms, Puns, Metaphor, Simile, Personification and Imagery

Students considered how to use the 6 +1 Writing Trait of Voice in their writing through establishing a personal Writing goal. This focused on connecting with the audience, creating mood and emotion, and using fitting language for the purpose of the poetry piece.

Through reading and analysing different poetry forms, students have also been working on their personal Reading goal of Expand Vocabulary. Students used Word Jars to record new vocabulary which they came across in their reading. This has assisted them to build and trial new vocabulary into their poetry pieces.

End of Term 3 Literacy Celebration Event

As an end of Term 3 celebration, students were treated to a live viewing of the Book Launch of The 169 Storey Treehouse, written by Andy Griffiths and illustrated by Terry Denton. This event was promoted by the State Library of Victoria and Andy Griffiths was the guest presenter.

It was very exciting to see Gavin in 3AT's ideas for a new storey level presented for all the world to see!

Thanks to Mrs Thwaites for organising this for us.
