Year 3/4–Celebrating Learning

Science!

Term 3 continues to be exciting and full of interesting learning. As part of our science unit, we have been learning all about heat energy. Students explore how heat is used in our everyday lives, they explain and identify various sources of heat, and participate in experiments to experience the properties of heat!

Students are encouraged to share how they use heat at home, and ways that heat can be used in a sustainable way.

“I turn the heater off when I’m not in the room”, says Wolfie.

“I make sure I wear warm clothing”, says Charlotte.

We have also been conducting experiments, including making a hypothesis and prediction. How does food dye travel through water of different temperatures? How quickly can we melt an ice cube?

Maths!

We are further developing our understanding of multiplication and division this term. Over the last few weeks we have looked at arrays as a visual model for supporting our understanding of multiplication and division, and the different ways we can represent our thinking. Students have been exploring the most efficient mental strategies for solving problems, and applying these strategies in flexible ways. (Insert picture of Pepi’s maths book)

English!

In Reading, students have been learning about different types of poetry. We have explored acrostic, haiku, limericks, as well as other types of rhyming poetry.

In Writing, students have been writing incredibly creative poems, using descriptive language to ‘paint a picture with words’ and focusing on their writer’s voice to engage readers. Many students are working hard on their entries for the school Book Week writing competition. These are original and imaginative pieces that students have put their heart and soul into!
