Foundation Spotlight
From Swimming to Science!
It’s busy, busy, busy in the Foundation classrooms. Here are some of the learning experiences enjoyed so far this term.
Visit from the Fire Fighters
In Foundation we had a very exciting morning with a visit from our local Fire Fighters. Students learnt the difference between safe and unsafe fires, about the different parts of a Fire Fighter’s uniform, and how a fire truck works.
Students were also very lucky to have a go at the hoses (thankfully no students were standing in the line of fire.)
“I loved squirting the hose. I think everyone would say that.”

Swimming
This term, Foundation students have taken part in the Learn to Swim program at Ivanhoe Aquatic Centre. After swimming, students write a recount of their experience at the pool.

Science Incursion
This term in Exploration, Foundation students have been designing and constructing cash registers from cardboard boxes, towers from blocks, rocket control panels out of Lego, and many many other amazing structures, inventions, and technologies. They have also been asking big questions such as, ‘How does a rocket work?’ or ‘How do robots work?’
To support all of these curiosities, Foundation students were visited by the Mad About Science team! Students were given the opportunity to explore the fundamentals of programming and algorithms while programming ‘Mouse-bots’ to explore a map and escape from mazes of their own designs. The sessions ended with a fantastic ‘Mouse-bot’ Dance off!
- My favourite part was getting through the maze. ~ Will, FB
- My favourite thing was programming the mouse bot. ~ Pip, FB
- I liked learning about robots and programming. ~ Arlo, FB
- I liked playing with the Mouse-bot. ~ Daisy, FB
- I learnt that you have to program robots for them to work. ~ Francis FB
