Division Athletics

On Wednesday 13th September, we had 8 students compete in the 2023 Knox Division Track and Field Athletics Finals. These students competed at Bill Seward Athletics Track with around 30 other schools from the Knox and Dandenong Division. Whilst my role involved convening the triple jump event, I managed to watch some of the students compete in their events on the day. The tenacity displayed by our students brought me a great sense of pride, as well as their willingness to achieve personal excellence. I also heard from parents there was a high level of excitement, encouragement and support for each other.

Congratulations to the following students who have now qualified for the Eastern Metropolitan Region Track and Field Championships at Doncaster Athletics Track on Thursday 19th October:

Chloe V (4T) - finished 1st in the 800m

Mitch (5D) - finished 1st in high jump

Maddy (5E) - finished 1st in discus and 2nd in shot put

Jack (6H) - finished 1st in the 800m

Maya (6W) - finished 2nd in the 200m

Well done to all students for your outstanding representation of Karoo Primary School!

Play To Your Strengths Program

On Monday 4th September and Thursday 7th September, we had facilitators from St Kilda Football Club (Danny Frawley Centre) visit our school to run 50-minute sessions with the students from Year 3 – 6 in their classroom. The program is entitled ‘Play to Your Strengths’ and draws on international expertise, using St Kilda football players (AFL and AFLW) in an engaging way to help students discover and work to their individual strengths. It celebrates differences and helps students overcome problems, improve their relationships and develop a greater sense of wellbeing.

Through interactive exercises, the students learnt about the 24 universal strengths, explored their top strengths and discovered ways they can flex these in all aspects of life, as well as gain an insight into the strengths of others. Knowing your character strengths isn’t just interesting information. When skillfully applied, character strengths can have a significant positive impact on your life!

Year 5/6 District Sport

Due to the weather on Friday 8th September, the second day of Year 5/6 District Sport was 'washed out' and all sports were cancelled on the day.  As a result, there were obviously some implications for Division progression and pennant winners. The School Sport Victoria rules have been followed to determine winners, teams progressing to Division and finals that needed to take place this week. All schools with teams that were recommended to play in a final were provided with the opportunity to arrange a time and date with the other schools involved. In the event that a final could not be arranged by Friday 15th September, the first 2 teams on the ladder in each sport (based on results from the first day) would progress to Division finals.

Based on results from the first day of District sport on Friday 1st September, our school was recommended to play in a final this week for the following sports:

Cricket boys (A)

Handball boys

Handball girls

Volleyball boys

Volleyball girls

Due to the unavailability of some schools to compete in finals this week as a result of pre-planned extra curricular events, I can provide you with the following update for each of the aforementioned teams:

Cricket Boys (A) – Karoowill progress through to Division finals in Term 4 with St Simons. If the teams compete against each other at Division, the winning team will receive the pennant for the District competition.

Handball Boys – Karoo competed in a grand final against Lysterfield today at Lysterfield Primary School with the game scheduled for 10 - 10:45am. Results to come.

Handball Girls – Karoo will receive the winning pennant and be considered the District champions. The sport of handball has no progression through to Division. This was communicated to the students during Year 5/6 sport time.

Volleyball Boys – Karoo competed in finals today at Lysterfield Primary School with three other schools. Results to come.

Volleyball Girls – Karoo will progress through to Division finals in Term 4 with The Basin. If the teams compete against each other at Division, the winning team will receive the pennant for the District competition. I am extremely pleased with the outcome for all sports and wish both teams competing on Friday the very best of luck!

I am extremely pleased with the outcome for all sports and look forward to sharing results, as well as photos of teams with pennants when these have been provided to the school!
