Foundation

This week in Foundation, we celebrated our 100th day of school! We have been looking forward to this highly anticipated event since the first day of Foundation. The students completed many exciting activities relating to the number 100. We made Fruit Loop necklaces (each necklace having 100 fruit loops on it), "I am 100 days smarter!' crowns and also made "100 days smarter" bookmarks. The students were also asked to collect 100 items in a small bag, to bring to school with them. We used these items to count to 100 and also bundle them in groups of 10.

To finish off our celebrations, we had a small dance party and even had cupcakes!

Our 100-year-old Foundation students...

Year 1/2

As part of our learning on procedural texts, this week the Year 1/2s made a delicious banana smoothie. After making the banana smoothie, the students had a go at writing their own smoothie recipe, ensuring they included a title, an aim, the ingredients/materials, the steps and a conclusion of what the product should look like.

The banana smoothie smelt very good. Suzanna

To make the banana smoothie, we needed to be careful using the blender. Mia

We blended up the banana, milk and yoghurt and it sounded very loud. Lance

I wrote a procedure on how to make an orange and lychee smoothie. Tazlyn

My recipe had purple grapes. Sharlotte

Year 2/3

Students in 2/3 always enjoy writing sessions when they use their Writer’s Notebook. They know the process that’s used - planting then unpacking a seed, shaping their writing, planning what they will write, writing their draft, editing and finally publishing their piece. The Writer’s Notebook is a great tool for helping our students write fluently and gain stamina as writers.

This story is about when I had cotton candy in Ballarat. I was there with my parents, brother and grandfather. I wrote about my time in Ballarat, especially when I ate the cotton candy and the toffee apple. They were delicious! The cotton candy stick had lights on it too. Chloe D.

This picture is of my sister when she turned 9. Me and my family went to the city with some friends. We were at the tallest building in the city. I chose this picture to write about because I thought it was a special moment and I enjoyed it so much. Laura

I wrote about the city and our excursion last term with year 2, 3 and 4. It was a really fun time and I really enjoyed writing about it and how we went to the cool Flagstaff Gardens where we had recess and then we went to the State Library where we had lunch and looked at the picture books. Arvin

I chose to write about me and my mum and how we walked to the Darebin Library. We took photos and did all these lovely things like we walked to our favorite shop. It had so many yummy lollies and lots and lots of Doctor Pepper for my mum. She loves Doctor Pepper. I wrote a recount. Eva

In my Writer's Notebook, I chose the photo of the excursion near the M.C.G. I wrote a recount about when I was walking to the M.C.G. I put my name up on the sheet to conference with Marie. I talk to Marie and then I publish my writing. Christopher

For my writing, I am now publishing my story about the school excursion to the Yarra River section of the city. First, I unpacked a seed which was a photo of students rolling down a grassy hill. I decided to write a recount. Then I planned how the recount was going to be, using dot points. After that, I wrote my draft in my literacy book. I then did my editing and had a conference with Marie. Now I am publishing my story. Kushi

I chose this photo of my family that was taken in my classroom on Family Week to write about. I chose to write a recount about Family Day. Firstly, I planned what I was going to write and then I did my draft. Then I wrote my name on the Conferencing sheet because I need Marie to look at my writing. When we have done this together, Marie will give me feedback. And then I will get a lined piece of paper to do my final and good copy. Chloe B.

Year 3/4

Over the first part of this term the Year 3/4 students have been learning about The Sacrament of Eucharist. At the start of the term, they completed a 'Think Puzzle Explore' graphic organizer to identify what they knew and what they wanted to know more about. At the end of the unit, students used their 'Think Puzzle Explore' sheet and their new knowledge to create a poster about what The Sacrament of Eucharist was about.

Jasmine - An exciting part of learning about the Eucharist was that I made my First Eucharist and got to have the bread. I really enjoyed creating my poster.

Tiffany - When the students making their Eucharist made their Eucharist, they must have been nervous. I learnt more about the Sacraments of the Catholic Church as I am Buddist.

Katelin H - When I was making my First Eucharist, I was very nervous because it was something I had not done before. But when I made my poster, I now knew more about the Eucharist than I did at the start, such as the symbols of the Eucharist are - Bread and Wine and the Pelican and her chicks. Plus, I really enjoyed making the poster.

Isabella - It was exciting to learn more about The Eucharist which meant I was getting closer to God. I enjoyed the project of The Eucharist.

Callix - I was pretty nervous because I didn’t know anything about the Eucharist except what I heard people talk about. Now I have learnt more such as to have the wine you need to be older.

Gail - I loved learning about The Eucharist and the best part was receiving it myself. Now that I have received my Eucharist, I feel closer to God.

Roman - When I made my Eucharist poster, and since I made my First Eucharist it has given me a better understanding and knowledge of the Eucharist. I learnt about how to live a Eucharistic Life and what it means to have the Eucharist.

Azariah - Seeing my friends make their First Eucharist, I learnt more about living a Eucharistic Life. So, when I grow up and make my Eucharist, I will know more about it.

Massie - I loved learning about the Eucharist because there are so many things about the Body of Christ and the Blood of Jesus to learn about, such as when Jesus had The Last Supper with his disciples. The part I loved about The Eucharist was when we were making the posters.

Nirav - I learnt a lot about The Eucharist and how to live a Eucharistic Life. One of the concepts of a Eucharistic Life is showing kindness. I also learnt about all the Sacraments in the Catholic Faith.

Maxie - It was a great experience, I was nervous but excited and curious. I was curious about what the body of Christ would taste like when it was blessed. I was proud but sad because I couldn’t get my old blessing but I was still happy. I was also happy my parents were with me too.

The Year 3/4s have also been learning how to sew with Giulia in Art. They have learnt how to do a running stitch and are working on their art piece. Here are a few enthusiastic sewers. More photos to follow next week.

Year 5/6

Learning Auslan

We are incredibly fortunate to have Janine at our school who is a passionate facilitator of the Auslan language. Each week Janine comes in to our classroom and teaches our students. This is what they think of it......

Onella ~ Auslan means Australian Sign Language. This particular language is used by the deaf community. It is a fun language to learn and a bit of a complicated language too.

Amelia ~ Auslan is tremendously fun to learn and easy to use in everyday life, the grade 5 / 6 students like to try and lipread and some of the results are very funny!

Glendon ~ Auslan is great to learn. I learnt that you could point at someone without making offense.

Michael ~ Auslan is very fun to do and it helps you understand what each sign means, like numbers, handshapes, all sorts of things. I love Auslan.

Harper ~ Auslan has been my favourite subject in school since it was a new thing for me to start learning. It has been and always will be my favourite subject.

Our weekly Auslan lessons are a real hit with the senior students!

One Pet is Enough!

By Keefe Resma

Year 5

Pets are adorable and that's a fact, but sometimes having too many is not worth the cost. LITERALLY!

Having a pet requires tons of responsibility, so it’s terrible for someone who has plans day after day. They wouldn’t have time to walk their dog or feed their cat and they definitely wouldn’t have time to vacuum the floor!  So one pet is enough for them.

Pets come with a price. An absurd and expensive price for a dog, such as the Tibet Mastiff, can cost thousands to an outrageous millions.  That’s too much money. Pets also give out severe allergies which some people (I don’t know how) CAN JUST LIVE WITH IT!?! Like Jacob, my friend, who’s allergic to dogs and cats yet still has two of each in his household.

Pets are amazing for comfort, but all you need is one. If you show them kindness, they’ll show it back but if you don’t show anything at all, they will do whatever they can to ruin your life. They will leave holes in your mattresses, leave scratch marks on your beautiful furniture and if they hate you enough, they will not use the litter box. You might say “It’s just because you’re raising them wrong!” WELL, I’M NOT! You can praise them, cherish them, give them all the meat they want but still if you try to call them, they act like you don’t exist and even sometimes they would just disappear!  (This paragraph is about cats, if you couldn’t tell)

Having petmakes your life a living hell.  But having pet is also wonderful. They provide company, comfort when you're sad and are loving too.

So I make this suggestion to you.

DO NOT HAVE MORE THAN 1 PET!

Sweet Is Better Than Savory

By Amelia K

Year 6

Sweets are delicious; this is because sweets have their own saying, they are more pleasurable and there is even healthy food that have sugar in them. So let’s resolve this debate once and for all, which is better ~ sweet or savory?

Firstly, have you ever heard of the term “sweet tooth”? That just proves sweets are more favorable than a savory snack. Besides, there are a wide range of sweet sensations like cake, ice cream, pudding and so much more. Sweets one - savory zero.

Second of all, I think sweets give more pleasure than savory foods. For example, like how a chocolate bar melts in your mouth or a lifesaver fizzing and tingling on your tongue. But with savory foods, if you eat too many it gets too salty and you need to drink a lot of water which leads to excessive bathroom visits. So now it's Sweets two - Savory zip (this is my case in point.)

Furthermore, things like fruits and other healthy foods have sugar in them! So if you like fruit, then you like sweet food and fruit is good for you in so many ways. Sweet three - Savory from hero to zero.

In conclusion, I think that sweet food is better than savory food in many ways and I hope I changed your opinion if you thought savoury was better.
