Principal's Report

 Principal’s Report 9th March

During my time at the Victorian Academy last year, I spent time with some amazing people, many of whom made me rethink some of the things we just take for granted in schools. One of those rethinks was about the regular school newsletter. It was suggested to me that Principals spend a large amount of time in the newsletter telling parents what they probably already know, that is, what’s happening or what’s already happened. What we don’t do enough of, is tell parents more about who we are, how we do what we do and why we do what we do. We particularly don’t tell parents and carers, the main audience of the newsletter, how you can be more connected and involved in your child’s education.

In the last newsletter, I sent our “Supporting Learning at Home”  document, the first in a series of documents that will help families become more connected with the school and your child’s learning journey. This information is not only informative for parents and carers but it helps you have better conversations at home about learning, an important ingredient in your support for your child’s learning. In this newsletter, we have linked the second in our series of documents, “Connecting with the School”. Sometimes, connecting with the school can be problematic for parents. The document attached gives you some tips on how to connect and communicate with the school in a way that supports your children and your connection with their learning. I hope you find this helpful.

Student Leader Celebration

We have recently filled our full contingent of student leader roles for 2024, with announcements happening over the last couple of assemblies. The full list of student leaders is below, and I congratulate all of the successful candidates. I also want to recognise any of our Year 6 students who applied for leadership roles. Leadership roles here at Lyndhurst are hotly contested and I want to recognise the courage it takes to put your hand up for such a role, in the knowledge that you may not be successful. In my eyes, and I have spoken about this with our year 6 students, all of our year 6’s are leaders in our school simply because of their position as role models in our school. Our year 6’s set a wonderful tone in our school for younger students to follow and they take that role very seriously. At our next assembly, we will welcome Sonia Kilkenny MP, the State Member for Carrum District, who will support our badge presentation for our student leaders. Parents of our student leaders are encouraged to attend the assembly.
