VCE Theatre Studies

Adelaide Fringe Festival

Our VCE Theatre Studies students embarked on an unforgettable theatrical odyssey at the Adelaide Fringe Festival over the Labour Day long weekend. Over four exhilarating days, they delved into a diverse array of performances, providing them with invaluable insights and experiences to enrich their studies.

Immersing themselves in a total of 14 shows, our students encountered a captivating mix of international and local performances across various forms of theatre. Among the highlights was Yoah, a mesmerising production by a Japanese circus company. Yoah seamlessly blended drums, electro sounds, digital effects and various art forms to create a truly immersive and unforgettable experience.

Another standout performance was Blue, a poignant exploration of the complexities of growing up. Through its exploration of beauty, joy and pain, Blue resonated deeply with our students, offering them profound insights into the human experience.

Additionally, our students were enchanted by Kaleidoscope, a spellbinding production that offered a constantly shifting optical illusion. Providing audiences with the space to explore, contemplate and dream, Kaleidoscope sparked the imagination and left a lasting impression on all who witnessed it.

The festival proved to be the perfect platform for our students to deepen their understanding of theatre and gain practical exposure to a wide range of theatrical techniques and styles. As they return from this enriching journey, our VCE Theatre Studies students are not only better prepared for their studies but also inspired to explore the boundless possibilities of the theatrical world.

We extend our heartfelt gratitude to all who supported and facilitated this transformative experience for our students, and we look forward to witnessing the creative endeavours that will undoubtedly emerge from their newfound inspiration.

Over the past week, Ms Kirk and Mr Mackie took our Theatre class to Adelaide to experience the Fringe Festival, one of the largest drama and theatre festivals in the world celebrating artists large and small, there was so much to see and do and we all had an amazing time despite the 38° days!

During our time there we saw a variety of shows from monologues to comedians, circus acrobats, VR experiences, opera and drag, 13 shows in total.

My favourite show we saw was a 60-minute piece of naturalist theatre called Blood of the Lambs, following the story of a woman in post-roe America, who finds herself trapped in Dallas airport with a lawyer who will ultimately decide her fate, this play was so powerful with just two actors the story they were able to get across of the struggles that women go through due to the constant changing of laws in America was incredible and will stick with me forever.

During the day when we weren't seeing shows we had the chance to explore the city, where we went shopping at Rundle Mall, beach day trip to Glenelg, went to the market for breakfast and relaxed by the pool.

As a 3/4 theatre studies student this trip has been beneficial to me as I now have a deeper understanding of theatrical styles and acting techniques that I can incorporate into our play Radium Girls and end of year monologue, it also helped us connect and get to know one another which will make our show even better.

Thanks again Ms Kirk and Mr Mackie for organising this amazing trip we all had the best time!
