What will I learn?
The course is divided into four modules:Â
Â
Module 1 - Introduction to Asia
Globalisation - the ever-increasing interconnection of Asia to Australia and the rest of the world. Â Modernity and tradition - which aspects of Asian society have adapted to modernisation, and which aspects of traditional Asia remain mostly unchanged.Â

Module 2 - Many Asiaâs
This module explores ethnic diversity within and across borders of Asian countries. The diverse practice of Islam across Asia. The role of women within Islamic communities across Asia. The rise of the term Nation-state and the impact of decolonisation on birthing new countries.

Module 3 - Young Asia
Youth culture, including the rise of gaming culture in China and South Korea. The relationship between K-pop and the popularity of plastic surgery in South Korea. Sex-skewed ratios that are caused by male preference in India and China.Â

Module 4 - What's for Dinner?
The module explores food security in the context of rising populations. We look at the culture of food consumption and the rise of the fast-food industry. Food production and farming practices in response to Asia's changing climate.Â

This course provides a fantastic 'taste' of what life at university is like. By taking this course, students will develop an understanding of the types of assessments offered by UTAS, become familiar with the online student hub (Mylo), and experience a new way of learning through lectures and tutorials (with the added assistance of a classroom teacher). In addition, on completion of this course, students can credit 25% of their first-year study at the University of Tasmania, HECS free!

Taking this course helps students become Asian literate. Asia homes 60% of the total world's population and is home to the fastest-growing economies in the world. Taking this course allows students to build knowledge of the histories, geographies, arts, cultures, and languages of the diverse Asian region.Â
