have been successful in Year 10 Mathematics Extended, 

preferably achieving at B level or higher.  Alternatively, 

successful completion of Mathematics Methods 

Foundation Level 3.

What will I learn?

This course develops reasoning skills in mathematical contexts and enhances students’ ability to interpret mathematical information. Along with this, students develop the capacity to communicate in a concise and systematic manner using appropriate mathematical language.

  

Why should I consider this course?

This subject is designed for students who intend to undertake tertiary studies related to mathematics and is a prerequisite for some university courses.  Students who are not yet at this level, but who wish to attempt Mathematics Methods in Year 12, should take Mathematics Methods Foundation Level 3 in Year 11.  This course also provides the necessary prerequisites for the study of Mathematics Specialised Level 4 and is a foundation for tertiary studies in disciplines in which mathematics and statistics have important roles. This includes engineering, the sciences, commerce and economics, health and social sciences.

 

What Skills does this course provide?

Mathematics provides a framework for thinking and a means of communication that is powerful, logical, concise and precise.  It impacts upon the daily life of people everywhere and helps them to understand the world in which they live and work.  The syllabus emphasises the acquisition of knowledge and skills in content areas such as; functions and their graphs, circular (trigonometric) functions, differential calculus, integral calculus and probability. 

 

What Pathway Options does this course provide?

This course is designed for learners whose future pathways may involve mathematics and statistics and their applications in a range of disciplines at the tertiary level.  These disciplines may include, engineering, the sciences and other related technology fields, commerce and economics, health and social sciences.  It is also a foundation course for the study of Mathematics Specialised Level 4.
