Week 10

Holiday Reading

Students should have brought home a reading challenge yesterday. We will also post a digital copy on compass by the end of the week. Students are encouraged to read every day of the holidays. Students will need to return the challenge in week 1 to their classroom teachers. If they have participated and parents have signed the challenge they will go into the draw to win a $20 Harry Hartog's Book Voucher.  There will be an infants and primary prize.

It is imperative that students continue to read over the holidays.  Here are some little tips to help nudge your children into action:

  1. Discover new genres - You can trial and sample books on amazon and apple books. Find something that sparks your child's interest.
  2. Play word, board and card games (e.g. bananagrams, boggle, scattergories, junior scrabble etc)
  3. Try audiobooks or podcasts. Use audible, spotify and ereaders to access (examples of podcasts: wow in the world, circle round, storykids podcast, short and curly, squiz kids)
  4. Visit the oxford owl library - has lots of free ebooks, games and resources: https://www.oxfordowl.co.uk/for-home/find-a-book/library-page/
  5. Cooking a favourite dish - get your children helping in the kitchen and reading recipes.
  6. Use https://storybird.com/ for students to design their own picture book.
  7. Print finderwords online to play or crossword puzzles: https://www.cool2bkids.com/printables/word-search/
  8. Have fun: build reading forts, read outside, play book bingo (write book titles on a blank bingo template and stamp off each one they read: https://myfreebingocards.com/templates)
  9. Most importantly - try to read 10-20 minutes per day to keep on top of reading and literacy skills - tick off the reading challenge and maybe win a prize!
