Whilst we know this day as ‘Ride to School’, we are really embracing all forms of transport that don’t involve a car. Walking or riding a bike are far superior ways to travel to school than by car. But how can we all get behind this concept in some way?
It is a day very dear to our hearts at St Thomas the Apostle PS, particularly those that are confronted with the traffic problems. It offers an opportunity for us to stop and think about better ways to travel to school. We can list the benefits of walking or riding to school:
These benefits are great and stand by themselves, but one of the immediate improvements that is most easily visible is the reduction in traffic. Our school carpark and local traffic struggles with the number of cars that are currently used to get to and from school. Not all students need to be driven to the school gate. Many of our students live close enough to walk and can do so safely. But there are considerations for families who don’t live close enough.
Students who live beyond a practical walking distance could still walk from a close-by location. A half-way point, in other words. Many of our families could choose a safe distance away and still allow for their child to walk to school. This strategy also keeps in the spirit of Ride to School Day.
Have a think about what you can do to help with the traffic situation and reap the benefits for your child’s health and wellbeing at the same time!
A couple of weeks ago our Year Five and Six students were invited to attend St Peters and work with their Year Nine students in a range of PE games. Our students had the chance to see a little of secondary school life, work with older students and in groups of different peers.
They represented St Thomas beautifully, displaying Safety and Respect throughout.
Well Done Year Sixes!
