International Womens Day

by Matilda Caughey

On Wednesday the 27th of April, eight senior girls, including myself, were invited by Sonya Kilkenny MP (State Member for Carrum District) to attend the Annual International Women’s Day Schools Forum.

It was a significant event that aimed to empower and inspire us, as attendees. Having the Hon Harriet Shing (Minister for Housing, Water, and Equality) as our guest speaker, the forum delved into pressing issues surrounding gender equality. We actively engaged in discussions about promoting gender equality in schools and strategies to eradicate gender discrimination.

The event served as a platform to spark meaningful conversations and drive our efforts towards creating a more equitable society. Overall, it was a powerful and impactful gathering that highlighted the importance of collaborative action in advancing women's rights and opportunities.

We are all so grateful for the experience to meet such strong and intelligent women who are pioneering change in politics. Events like this help us girls visualise ourselves as changemakers and leaders in society. We all learnt so much about what we can do in our own schools, communities, and organisations to help the fight against gender stereotypes, discrimination, and bias.

A shoutout to Ms Douglas and Mr Petersen for giving us a chance to attend such a valuable event!
