What's happening in Term 2 - Week 2

There are a number of overdue Library books outstanding from Term 1.

Please take some time to check around at home and return your loans as soon as possible so that you may resume your borrowing this term.  Thank you!

2024 Victorian Premiers' Reading Challenge

Our 2024 Premiers’ Reading Challenge is now underway and there has already been more than 500 books read and over 100 book reviews published!  We hope that you have all been able to log in without any issues.  Please do not hesitate to contact your child’s classroom teacher if you require further information, alternatively drop into the Library and I will happily assist you.

The theme this year is EXPLORE, LEARN, ENJOY! The challenge is a great reading incentive for all of our students to experiment with new genres and authors, share reading experiences with their family and friends. There is a window display at the Library which is updated weekly to celebrate our top 5 student readers, leading year level and leading grade.  At the end of the challenge, in September, our top five readers are presented with a gift during an assembly for their individual efforts and the leading grade receives a special (yummy) classroom treat to enjoy with their teacher!

Look out for promotional posters that our wonderful Library Captains will be placing around the school!

National Simultaneous Storytime (NSS)

“When we read together it helps language development, learning and literacy, all while building community. It’s also a lot of fun.”

National Simultaneous Storytime (NSS) is held annually by the Australian Library and Information Association (ALIA). Every year a picture book, written and illustrated by an Australian author and illustrator, is read simultaneously in libraries, schools, pre-schools, childcare centres, family homes, bookshops and many other places around the country. Now in its 24th successful year, it is a colourful, vibrant, fun event that aims to promote the value of reading and literacy, using an Australian children's book that explores age-appropriate themes, and addresses key learning areas of the National Curriculum for Foundation to Year 6.

This year NSS takes place on Wednesday 22 May 2024 at 12:00pm.

Bowerbird Blues stars a beautiful bowerbird on the search for (you guessed it) BLUE!  It’s a moving story of longing and connection, that unfolds as the bowerbird’s search sends him soaring across the sea, sky and city. He swoops and snatches vibrant treasures for his collection, and soon his bower – a mix of natural and unnatural objects – attracts something greater and more fulfilling than he could ever have imagined.

Aura Parker is an award-winning illustrator, writer and designer. Her picture books are joyful with a playful sense of humour, brimming with details to explore. Aura Parker’s storytelling though words and pictures inspires imagination, courage and confidence in young readers as well as a love, curiosity and passion for nature.

ANZAC Day

This week our students have been able to browse and borrow from our vast collection of ANZAC DAY themed books including Picture Story, Fiction and Non-Fiction.

It has been so wonderful to observe their interest and enthusiasm to borrow and learn more about this important event in our calendar.

The Great Book Swap

SAVE THE DATE

SEPTEMBER 5th

We are excited to be hosting our second Great Book Swap event to support the great work of the Indigenous Literacy Foundation.

What is the Great Book Swap?

The Great Book Swap is a fantastic way to celebrate reading locally, learn more about Indigenous Languages and culture, while raising funds for the Indigenous Literacy Foundation.  By hosting a Great Book Swap Karoo students and families will be actively helping gift 18,000 new, carefully chosen books to children in remote Communities across the country.

As part of our registration Karoo has been assigned to the Bigibigi House. (Pig in Kriol, NT)

We have purchased a copy of the picture story book; Moli bin git stak (Moli gets stuck) which is told in English and Kriol.

While the event does not take place until Thursday 5th September we do need to start our book donation drive NOW! A basket will be placed in the office foyer for you to leave donations until a week before the event.  We kindly ask that you only donate books in good condition and suitable reading for Primary aged students. Library Captains, Bailey, Michael, Felix and Zoe will be checking the donations regularly and sorting them into appropriate age levels.

On the day of the event all books will be displayed on tables, students will visit the Library with their class to browse the books and leave a gold coin donation in exchange for a book.
