What is happening in The Arts?

Castle Unit

Imagine yourself deep in the jungle, under the sea, in a land of ice and snow, on a farm, in the moonlit bush, on an African plain or in a prehistoric swamp. That’s just what Castle Unit students have been doing through reading and responding to the picture book, Imagine by Alison Lester. Classes have been using the pages of this book as inspiration for drama, movement, music and even some visual arts. We have acted out being swallowed by a boa constrictor and imitated moving like animals in the rainforest as well as in Antarctica. Students have used scarves and ribbons to help create movements of different sea creatures and they participated in learning drumstick patterns to the song, Octopus’ Garden. They have made collages showing animals that live in Antarctica, a garden scene with bees and flowers and, following a First Nations story about how the echidna got its spikes, some classes made an echidna using paint sticks, paper strips and straws. We will continue our adventures to other places for the remainder of the term.

Stilwell/ Holly Units

This term, both Stillwell and Holly Units have been exploring the art of pantomime – telling a story without words through expressive movements, gestures and facial expressions. Each week, students have been building their performance skills by experimenting with hand gestures, body movement and facial expression to portray a variety of characters in different scenarios. They have enjoyed working on character improvisations and creating freeze frames to capture the beginning, middle and end of a story. Next, they will dive into slapstick comedy, which promises plenty of fun and laughter! To conclude the unit, students will work in groups to plan, rehearse and perform their very own short pantomime skits.

Kaboom Percussion Visit Week 9

We are very excited to be having Kaboom Percussion group come to perform at our school on Thursday September 18th. Kaboom performances feature a range of never-before-seen instruments that the musicians have specially crafted. Throughout the show, the performers demonstrate the science of sound production in fun and engaging ways, while showing students how they can recycle everyday items to make their own unique musical creations. Choir

The HEPS Choir have been working together with great collaboration, and their last two assembly performances have shown just how amazing they are beginning to sound. Over the remainder of this term, students will be working hard to learn all fifteen songs by heart, along with choreography for some pieces. We encourage families to support their child with weekly practice at home so they can confidently achieve this goal. We are also delighted to congratulate Lily H on being selected as a soloist for the concert in early November, where she will perform the song, Put A Little Love In Your Heart. Well done, Lily!
