Year 2 Team

It has been a busy and exciting time in Grade 2 as we explore new learning across all areas!
English
In Core Literacy, we are focusing on understanding silent letters—those tricky letters in words that we don’t pronounce—and the schwa sound, the most common vowel sound in English that often appears in unstressed syllables and Australian slang. These skills support accurate reading and spelling.
In our writing lessons, students are learning to write clear, simple sentences as well as more complex compound sentences by joining ideas with conjunctions like and, but, and or. We are also introducing subordinating conjunctions such as because and although.
Mathematics
In maths, our focus has been on place value and fractions. We have been building our understanding of hundreds, tens, and ones, and using this knowledge to read, write, and order numbers. We have also been exploring fractions, learning how to identify halves, quarters, and eighths of shapes and collections, and even linking fractions to real-life events.
Wellbeing
Our well-being focus this term has been on respect for ourselves, others, and our environment. Through class discussions, role-plays, and reflection activities, students have practised ways to speak and act respectfully, and to recognise the positive impact respectful choices have on our classroom community.
Humanities
In Humanities, we have been exploring places. We have investigated the features of different locations, from our local community to other parts of Australia and the world. Students have enjoyed creating maps, identifying landmarks, and discussing how places are connected to people’s lives.
We are looking forward to continuing our learning journey and building on the great progress students have made so far this term.
