Spotlight on Learning

Sea Pod (Year 4)

In History this term, Sea 3 and 4 have been exploring the rich diversity of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander history and ways of life before European settlement in 1788.

Students have been looking at photos of artefacts and using these to understand how Aboriginal ways of life have changed and remained the same. Together, we have created a timeline that dates the discovery of different artefacts, which teach us about Aboriginal history and ways of life from up to 65,000 years ago.

Students are now working in groups to research one traditional aspect of Aboriginal life, such as People & Beliefs (Dreaming), Food, Shelter, Tools & Weapons, Customs & Ceremonies, Clothing, or Art, Music & Dance. Each group has been investigating the importance of their topic for different Aboriginal cultural groups and is exploring artefacts that support their research.

This unit has been very important in expanding students’ knowledge of the history and cultures of First Nations peoples in Australia.
