When to Send Your Child to School and When to Keep Them Home

To protect the health of all students and staff, it's important to know when it's safe for your child to attend school and when they should stay home to rest and recover.

 

Your child can attend school if:

  1. They are feeling well and have no symptoms of illness.
  2. They have mild allergy symptoms (like sneezing or a clear runny nose) but no fever.
  3. They have been cleared by a doctor for any chronic conditions causing symptoms.

Keep your child home if they:

  1. Have a fever that is 38 degrees or higher and until fever free for 24 hours without medicine.
  2. Are vomiting or have diarrhea stay home until at least 24 hours have passed since the last episode.
  3. Have a persistent cough, wheezing or shortness of breath especially if it's disruptive or paired with fever or fatigue.
  4. Have sore throat with other symptoms especially if paired with fever, swollen glands or white patches in the throat.
  5. A rash which is unexplained or spreading and if accompanied with a fever or itching.
  6. Have a red, crusty or watery eyes which could be conjunctivitis make sure to keep your child home until evaluated by a doctor.
  7. Are extremely fatigue, unusual irritability or difficulty focusing these can be signs of underlying illness and needs a rest.

When in doubt check with your child's doctor and follow their guidance as keeping your child home can help prevent illness from spreading to others. Healthy children learn better, and a healthy school benefits everyone. This winter has been especially bad for virus' - including colds, flu and other contagious illnesses. We're seeing higher number of children getting sick and it's more important than ever to take precautions to keep everyone safe and healthy.
