Generative AI and learning
Generative AI is reshaping education, creativity, and the world of work at an extreme speed. As educators, we have a responsibility to guide students through this change with purpose and academic integrity. At Chev we are working to harness the benefits of AI while safeguarding our values, supporting student wellbeing, and preparing learners for a future where digital fluency is essential.
Our Approach: Clarity, Consistency, Capability
Our approach to generative AI is grounded in three guiding principles:
These pillars help us navigate the opportunities and challenges of AI and allows students to harness AI for their learning.
Clarity: Making the Invisible Visible
The biggest concern from students is that they lack clarity about when and to what extent they can use AI in their learning. In Term 4 we are introducing AI Road Signs to assessment and learning tasks to allow teachers to provide clarity to students about how they expect students to use AI on a given task.
These are split into 5 levels based on Leon Furze AI Assessment scale as seen below.
Consistency: Access to Generative AI tools
We have provided students with consistent access, with the protections of their Education Accounts, to Generative AI tools to utilise in their learning.
Currently students have access to;
With changes to Terms and Conditions, we are hoping to also allow access to Microsoft CoPilot and Google NotebookLM in the near future.
Capacity: Empowering Learners and Educators
Finally we are focusing on building the capabilities of the students and the teachers to have confidence to use AI meaningfully. This includes professional learning sessions for staff, scaffolded experiences for students and ongoing dialogue about the role of AI in learning and the modern workplace. By fostering capacity we are working towards AI becoming a tool for growth and creativity rather than a tool for cognitive offloading.
